Prince George, B.C.- The Canadian Cancer Society is calling on the City of Prince George to develop a bylaw that would ban the use of pesticides for cosmetic uses.
In a presentation to Council, Dr. Marie Hay and Karensa Medhurst advised Council there was considerable evidence which supports a link between the use of pesticides and cancer. According to one study quoted, the risk of childhood leukemia increases by 2 to 3 times in those who have had childhood or pre-natal exposure to household or garden pesticides.
The presentationwas supp;orted by 31 letters calling on the City for action.
36 B.C. communities are among the more than 185 communities across Canada which have adopted pesticide bylaws.
They suggest a bylaw that would ban all “cides” from private and public lands, that there be no infestation clause and no exceptions unless public health is at risk. They also call for an educational campaign.
As for enforcement, they suggest enforcement be complaint driven such as is the case with noise, nuisance or smoking bylaws.
They also call for the bylaw to be phased in with an education component first, then restrictions put in place, action on complaints, and then the issuing of fines.
Council has moved to have Staff take a look what is or isn't possible through such a bylaw. It was pointed out that a bylaw would not be applicable to industry, commercial or school grounds, but would only be applied to Civic, and residential properties.
Staff say it will take a couple of months to prepare such a report. That means, it is unlikely any bylaw would be in effect this year.

Personally not a big deal as my yard refuses to grow anything but dandelions anyway- and no amount of Roundup's gonna change that- but it bothers me that blanket proposals like this just go too far, and like I mentioned, aren't well grounded in science. Not ALL "cides" are toxic.
