Council Urged to Ban Use of Pesticides

Prince George, B.C.- The Canadian Cancer Society is calling on the City of Prince George to develop a bylaw that would ban the use of pesticides for cosmetic uses.

In a presentation to Council, Dr. Marie Hay and Karensa Medhurst advised Council there was considerable evidence which supports a link between the use of pesticides and cancer. According to one study quoted, the risk of childhood leukemia increases by 2 to 3 times in those who have had childhood or pre-natal exposure to household or garden pesticides.

The presentationwas  supp;orted by 31 letters calling on the City for action.

36 B.C. communities are among the more than 185 communities across Canada which have adopted pesticide bylaws.

They suggest a bylaw that would ban all “cides” from private and public lands,   that there be no infestation clause and no exceptions unless public health is at risk.   They also call for an educational campaign.

As for enforcement, they suggest  enforcement be complaint driven such as is the case with noise, nuisance or smoking bylaws.

They also call for the bylaw to be phased in with an education component first, then restrictions put in place, action on complaints, and then the issuing of fines.

Council has moved to have Staff take a look what is or isn't possible  through such a bylaw.  It was pointed out that a bylaw would not be applicable to  industry, commercial or  school grounds, but would only be applied to Civic, and residential properties.

Staff say it will take a couple of months to prepare such a report.  That means,  it is unlikely any bylaw would be in effect this year.

Another popular idea based on bad science. "Ban all -cides" means that even the proven innocuous ones will no longer be able to be used.

Personally not a big deal as my yard refuses to grow anything but dandelions anyway- and no amount of Roundup's gonna change that- but it bothers me that blanket proposals like this just go too far, and like I mentioned, aren't well grounded in science. Not ALL "cides" are toxic.

I guess the city doesn't do anything about this either, just like with the flouride...don't they care about the health of the people of this city. OMG think I will be making a move very soon!!
I would think if our Doctor's show up and explain the dangers that the city council would jump right on it and try a little harder to do something to get this stuff out of this city THIS summer. Makes me sick!!
You better stop driving your cars people and bbqing too.
This city looks terrible as it is, lets make it a little worse.
All smoke a mirrors, anyone ever see the bylaw office enforce a bylaw? Over the years I have called them on two matters which left me feeling like the guilty one.
you better stop drinking coffee (caffiene) and using aspirin also, they are more toxic than the most common herbicides too...
"According to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, 10 of the 12 most dangerous and persistent organic chemicals are pesticides."

Ah, well. Let's spray the stuff on our lawns and gardens because coffee and aspirins are going to kill us first anyways!

Mankind. It's own worst enemy.

Yes! Stop the casual unscientific fluoride addition to our tap water! It is NOT harmless! And it is NOT necessary!

Sure lets go back to the good ole days when 99% of the population were peasants living in squalid filth because the land only yielded a fraction of the produce. We'll deal with the tapeworms and fleas, ticks chiggers, etc and the diseases they spread as they come. Hopefully we'll have the strength to rebuild our shanties every few years as the carpenter ants eat them. The ants and maggots in our beds will be a welcome source of protein since only our lords could afford meat. I'm sure the 1% of society that will live in grand opulence on our scraggly backs will be quite comfortable and support this bylaw wholeheartedly. This "back to the land" garbage has got to stop. Uneducated people should not be making laws.
I agree with the Gamblor. if pesticides are so crappy and were all going to die from it,..... than why are we living longer than we did a 100 years ago????

gamblor: I've NEVER applied pesticide of any kind to control Carpenter ants or anything else in the past 50 years. If you know what to do to keep these pests away you'll not have to apply chemicals either.

He spoke: Yes, most people are living longer... but not thanks to pesticides, but thanks to better diet mostly. In addition people are living longer because of less physically demanding work, better medical care, etc. What you should be asking is this: how much longer would we live if we didn't expose ourselves to toxins constantly???

A few years ago the Mount Sinai school of medicine - arguably the top dog in human biology research worldwide - put out a series of ads in the New York Times calling on our political leadership, worldwide, to ban all of these chemicals because, as they stated, "we now know they cause cancers in large numbers."

You guys... go argue with these scientists on the subject of chemicals and their effect on human biology. The people that do the research say you're wrong.

So a bunch of quacks do a "study" and you buy it without question? I got a bridge over the Nechako I'd like to sell you. Wire the funds to my offshore account.

Congratulations, you do not know the frustration of having to deal with pests. Many other people do. You probably live in the city. You are also selfish, ignorant and uneducated. Stop getting copy and pasting your worldview from the New York Times and start using some common sense.
get ready for lots of mosquitoes if this happens....a few more people making a living off of fear tactics....just like those who are making a fortune by scaring people by their claims of global warming. Polution...you bet...global warming I am in no way convinced...and if it is warming up it probably has more to do with earth tilt than the rest of the garbage that is spouted out there for people to fear.
I've worked in the herbicide business for years, and I welcome this ban.

BCRacer, mosquitoes treatments are not done using pesticides - a biotic agent is used.

There are other ways of dealing with noxious weeds without using pesticides. City did some trials using propane heat torches last year. The internet is full of all effective weed killer recipes you can make at home - for free!

I'm ashamed to see that the attitude of most commenters here places a higher value on dead dandelions than human health. 1 in 4 Canadians are expected to die of cancer.

Wake up and smell the chemical soup you are living in.
I agree totally cumudgeonscurse
It says in the story that this is not applicable to school grounds. Isn't that where you would want a ban if these "cides" are not good for children?

More "nut jobs"
Try to imagine the whole world taking one day off from their lives and not tell anyone else what they should do. Imagine the whole world (as individuals) minding their own business. Just one day. Every theoretical altruistic person won't try and sell you a bill of goods about global warming, natural gas contracts, gun registration, fluoride, political ideology, pesticides, abortion, religion, soap, etc. Make the speaking of the phrase, "You know what you should do?" a capital crime and get the earths population down to a friendly mob. But then again I would be guilty ,too. Bummer. Just can't win.
