The Province has announced it will match funding for a Highway of Tears symposium planned for next month.

The Lheidli T’enneh announced they would put $1500 dollars towards such a symposium, in the wake of the murder of 14 year old Aielah Saric-Auger. Her body was found February 10th off the shoulder of Highway 16. The Government says it will also work with victim services groups and other local agencies to ensure grants are available for related initiatives.

Solicitor General John Les says he will attend the symposium as will other government officials and the RCMP. The police will provide an update on the status and progress of their various investigations. Twenty-two senior crime investigators were recently assigned to assist in the investigation of Aielah’s murder. A further 15 officers are working on other investigations into the disappearances or deaths of eight other women, dating back to 1990. All but one of those eight women were native.

The Solicitor General stated the deaths have deeply touched and saddened people all over B.C. “Police resources are important “ says Les “but we will also be working with First Nations groups like the Lheidli T’enneh and community organizations in the Prince George area to find out what we can all do together to help make Highway 16 a safe highway again,”

Lheidli T’enneh Councilor, Rena Zatorski says organizational meetings are happening this week to set the dates, location and agenda for the symposium. She says they have received a tremendous amount of support, both in the way of volunteers and finances from numerous groups wanting to help. She expects full details of the symposium will be available later this week
