--It's time for the Prince George Spruce Kings to inject some youth into their aging organization.

They've got a chance to do that with the hiring of an assistant coach. The right guy for the job is Trevor Sprague. The team has snubbed him in the past, but as they look to the future, the organization should realize he's the candidate that meets the qualifications.

He's local, he's young, he's a proven winner, he's available and last, but not least, he would come at the right price.

For some strange reason, the 27-year-old Sprague thinks it's a dream job to be with the Spruce Kings, even it that means being the right hand man to head coach Ed Dempsey. And he would be willing to do it for expenses and a small honorarium.

His resume is impressive. Last season (after being overlooked for the job originally), he stepped in just prior to Christmas to take over as head coach of the sad-sack cellar dwelling Cariboo Canucks major midget team. Quickly he turned the club around and just a month after taking over, the Canucks responded as they were the best Canadian team and 4th overall out of 25 at an international tournament in Kelowna.

That would be the stepping stone to provincials, where the team reached the final against the Thompson Blazers.

Two seasons before that, Sprague coached the Prince George midget “B” team to the BC championship in Juan De Fuca.

Can he be an assistant? You bet. He was Brent Arsenault's associate when Prince George won the BC Midget “AAA” Championship in 2001, the same year that PG hosted the Nationals.

So, what's the knock on the Curtis Elite sales rep, who moved to the city from New Brunswick at the age of 5?
Well, Sprague can be brash, bold, abrasive, in your face and not politically correct. He's not always a yes man as he likes to speak his mind. He reminds me of a “Meisner” with one big exception; he's got talent.

The Spruce Kings need new ideas and a breath of fresh air. Many of the guys in the organization are closing in on their pensions. Some are re-cycled hacks that do have something to offer, but still would benefit with a fresh enthusiastic youthful voice.

Word on the street is that the assistant coaching job could go to Cougars scout
and long time Dempsey buddy Mike Hawes or former Spruce kings head coach Dale Marquette.

I'm not necessarily saying they are bad choices, but if it means having more than one local assistant coach, so be it.

Don't hire Trevor Sprague because I said so. Hire him because it's what the team needs at this time.

--Isn't it refreshing when athletes don't hesitate to express their true feelings. Here's what
Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Kris Jenkins had to say about Warren Sapp of the Oakland Raiders, in conversation with The Associated Press.

"I hate him. Everybody says I'm supposed to be polite when I talk to you all, but I hate him. He talks too much, he doesn't make any sense, he's fat, he's sloppy, he acts like he's the best thing since sliced bread. He's ugly, he stinks, his mouth stinks, his breath stinks, and basically his soul stinks too. Not too many people have personalities like that and survive in life. I don't know how he does it."

Is that all Kris ?

--Yogi Berra would be proud of Brent Barry's bio in the San Antonio Spurs' media guide

"He would give his right arm to be ambidextrous."

--I have to admit it's almost embarrassing how many media hats my very slightly balding head is wearing. Besides barking out the signals on radio stations 94X and the Wolf@97fm, I'm writing for upstart opinion250.com on a weekly basis and now the PG Free Press has picked up my column.  I'm also doing a weekly sports gig for the top local TV station in Prince George, that being Shaw channel 10.
The only thing left would be a book, but that will have to wait until the fall.

And, how is your week ?

I agree with Hartley on this one. All levels of hockey in PG need some young blood injected into them. Sprague offers a new perspective and the latest in what is being offerred through Hockey Canada.

Marquette and Hawes? They were old school 10 years ago, and positively ancient by todays standards.
Hartley,

You are right, the Spruce Kings need to inject some youth into their aging organization. However, Mr. Sprague is not the guy.

Hartley, you are overrating Trevor's coaching abilities. Yes, Trevor did win the Midget B Provincial and did take the Caribou Canucks to a 2nd place finish at last year's provincials. His accomplishments sound great to the everyday "John Doe" but if you followed these two teams closely you would soon realize that anyone could have been successful with these teams (even you Hartley). The Midget "B" team that won the provincials was made up of a bunch of AAA players that quit their Midget AAA team to play on the Midget B team. Yes, Hartley this Midget B team that won the provincials was really a Midget AAA team in disguise. The 2004/2005 Canucks team was a very talented group of kids. This crop of players were good, and for years competed at a high level in any tournament they entered, and last year was no exception. In 2004/2005, it was only a matter of time until they "broke lose" and challenged the top teams in the province. They would have been successful with anyone behind the bench, and if you followed the team you would agree. Trevor coached a Midget AAA team after his Midget B team's provincial championship and that team couldn't make it out of the zones, never mind to a provincial championship (interesting how you didn't mention this in your article).

By the way Hartley, Trevor was Brent Aresnault's assistant, not associate-hey, now there's a young, proven coach.
Hey Big B, if Hawes and Marquette are old school I'm suggesting you to put the lid back on your glue jar.Grant Williams ,D"arcy Rahier guys like these are old.Sprague is just a youngster who would love the opportunity. In this case Hawzy is the man,he knows the game well and I personally would love to see him leave the Cougar organization and go to work for the Kings. As an assistant with the Kings he would travel further up the hockey ladder than he will with the Cats.Just my opinion boys
ROCK keep it real 24/7
Hartley,
I think the Kings are in a win-win situation whether they hire Marquette, Hawse or Sprague. Personally, I like Sprague because he is too good for any PGMHA or BCAHA team. Also, he is above any of the petty politics offered by PGMHA. After all, thanks to the current prez, PGMHA should be a fully functional all girls league in the next couple years, and although Trevor would do a great job in this environment he is much more suited for a junior league. I say hire Trevor but I wouldn't be dissappointed if Marquette and/or Hawse came on board. All of them are great bunch of guys who would do a super job.
Rock, my only comment about Marquette or Hawes, is what have they ever done coaching-wise, outside of their stellar (and both were exceptional juniors no doubt about that) playing careers?

Tom Bohmer was a winner, and got the shaft, especially when you consider the other guys now being considered, don't even belong in the same league as Tom Bohmer.
testing
Big B,for you to say that Hawzy or Marquette don't belong in Tom Bohmer's league is a major contradiction.I ask you ,what has Tom Bohmer ever done coaching?did he ever play at a significant level?I'm not trying to beat you up on this but you make some silly comments, for you to say Marquette and Hawze had stellar playing careers I am suspect of your hockey knowledge. These 2 guys played a few years in the Dub,Marquette had a cup of coffee at the minor pro level(no world junior,no NHL and neither player played in europe)These are not what one would call stellar careers.Marquette is to much of an old time coach, alot like Eddy,Trevor Sprague dosn't pack the political clout(He never played beyond midget hockey) to make the transition, the only real local candidate for the job is Hawzy,he and Ed are a good match,Eddy the old style and Hawzy the new style technical type. And for the record,I am not an expert and I only played to the midget level so take what I say with a grain of salt
ROCK keapin it real 24/7
Trevor would be a great addition to the Spruce Kings but their gain would be a great loss to Prince George minor hockey. PGMHA would be faced with yet another vacancy. They need coaches in a big way. I agree with the comment pg77. I think I will pull my boys out of minor hockey and put them in ringette. My daughter I will place into hockey as girls have a greater future playing the sport in pg than the boys do. If your ice is taken away, theirs a good chance a girls team NEEDED the ice for their 5th practice of the week.
