If the College of New Caledonia's Board of Governors approves some program changes there will be some job losses at CNC.
The College would like to make a shift away from some traditional academic programs and respond to the demand for trades training. In order to do that, layoff notices have been issued to some 24 instructors.
Communications Manager Steven Raper explains that under contract obligations, layoff notices have to be issued before the end of the March. While new positions will be added to the trades side, the net "loss" is not known at this time, as it all depends on which programs the Board of Governors approves.
It is clear there has been a declining enrollment in university transferable programs, says Raper, who adds "It is our responsibility to respond to the needs of the community, and right now, people are telling us they want more trades training."
Last year, some 20 layoff notices were issued as the College prepared for changes, but in the end, only 6 instructors were actually let go.
The final decision will be made tomorrow when the Board of Governors meets.
