On the day his Number 5 jersey was raised to the rafters of the Bell Centre, Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion passed away earlier yesterday in Atlanta, Georgia at the age of 75.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement:

"All Canadians learned with profound sadness today (Saturday), the passing of Bernard 'Boom Boom' Geoffrion.

During his illustrious career as a hockey player, in particular with the Montreal Canadiens, and until the end of his public life, Mr. Geoffrion gave us all an example of pride, determination and courage that are now part of our history.

Sweater Number 5 hangs in the Bell Centre as a glorious emblem in the history of our national sport.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to extend our condolences to the family of Mr. Geoffrion, and the expression of our admiration for a remarkable personality."

Geoffrion's wife, Marlene, and their three children were on-hand for last night's jersey-raising ceremony.  A moment of silence was observed, as well, before the start of the Canadiens game against the New York Rangers, which ended 1-0 for Montreal.
