20 year old Brent Melanson died after suffering  wounds in a machete attack  on Third Avenue in the early hours of October 30, 2004.  He died in hospital shortly after the attack.

It took the jury just over 24 hours to deliver its verdict.

Court resumes this morning at eleven to set a sentencing date for the two.  While Smith's sentence will be  life, there has been no suggestion on how long he must serve before being eligible for parole, the range is anywhere from ten years to 25.

I remember a time when differences were settled with the fist, (right or wrong) and everyone went on with their lives. Nowadays it seems these young people are playing for keeps. It is sad how many lives were affected by this tragic case.If I remember correctly it started over a drink being spilt or splashed on the sister to the victim.
IMO its the perfect case for the death penalty.
Were the girls charged that drove Smith and Miller around looking for Brent?
I could be wrong, but my understanding was that the girls didn't know that the other two were looking for Mr. Melanson, but that they just happened to spot him and made the girl driving stop the car?? I apologize if I've got that wrong . . .
Wow! My heart goes out to the families of these boys. I am truly sorry for them, I am, but I have to say that I hope those 2 boys get the maximum sentence that can be given. They took a life. My friend watched her son die that night and I know what her and her family have been going through. Hopefully justice being done will help them to get on with their lives.
Both out, on the street, in five to seven years. They'll be in their prime when they get out. Everyone's life is cheap.
The consequences for killing another human being must be clear and final. Eventually, the deterant will be more important than the crime. It's time to deal with the issues and crimes first. Then deal with the people and lives second. There is no room for bleeding hearts in the courtroom. Carry out justice and the crimes will reduce. Percy
When someones is murdered, now that is a life sentence. The deceased don't have a chance to get out and start over. Their families have to live with the fact that they were brutally murdered, and relive that night over and over again for the rest of their lives. They have nightmares about the photos that were shown in the court room, not to mention that mother watching her child die. I hope those 2 boys get the maximum sentence. I truly believe that we should bring back the death penalty, maybe people would think about the consequences of their actions a little more. An eye for an eye?
