King George V school, circa 1922
Now officially incorporated under the BC Society Act, the "Friends of KGV" Society is trying to find an alternate location closer to the Crescents before the school is demolished. The initial intent of moving the building to the Queensway property owned by Ed and Lynn Gilliard, has been virtually abandoned primarily because of the problems of trying to maneuver the building through a corridor of low-hanging fibre optic and other sensitive communication cables.
The Gilliards, continue to meet with School District 57 Administration to find ways of working together to save the building.
At the same time, they support the efforts of the SD 57 and Board's Achitects to incorporate visual characteristics as well as some components of the heritage structure into a proposed new high school intended to replace Duchess Park School.
Chaired by Ed Gilliard, the Friends of KGV Society has been formed to help assist with efforts to preserve the KGV school and its heritage. The Friends of KGV Society is recruiting others who have the same interests and are willing to assist in a way in which they feel comfortable. A web site (www.jokat.ca/kgv.) has been developed to support the efforts of the Society.
