Solicitor General John Les addresses Highway of Tears Symposium
After hearing emotional presentations from the families of the young women who disappeared or died along Highway 16, Solicitor General John Les, announced his Ministry was committing $25,000 along with another $25,000 from the Ministry of Children and Development to help support recommendations coming from the Highway of Tears Symposium.
The 50 thousand is "seed money" says John Les, who recognized the 500 people in attendance had "Gathered under the shadow of the missing and murdered women."
In making the announcement on the funding, Les said "I am hopeful the dialogue today and tomorrow will result in a better understanding of what needs to be done, to make this region safe for all British Columbians."
The Symposium resumes tomorrow when the focus will change to identifying risk factors, and developing plans to minimize those risks.
