The UNBC Board of Governors meets in the Senate Chambers tomorrow at 9am

The Board of Governors for the University of Northern B.C. will huddle this weekend to look at a possible increase in tuition rates.

The Board will examine a $54 million dollar operations budget proposal for 2006/07. That budget includes a call for a tuition increase of 2%.

If approved, that means tuition for a full year, full time student would climb from the current $4,110 dollars to $4,192.

The Board will also look at shifting money into opportutinites and programs that will increase enrollment. The number of students at UNBC slipped 2.7% last year. Some of the opportunities being examined include more resources for student recruitment, increasing scholarships, and expansion of programs that have proven popular.

Interesting to note that the number of students slipped 2.7% last year. I beleive that the Provincial Government expects this University to have an enrollment increase of 5% per year, it looks like they are not making the grade. A decline in enrollment of course means a decrease in funding. I suspect that they will water down the courses and enrollment requirements to try and get their numbers up, however I beleive that the well is going dry, and that they will have a difficult time ahead.
In some ways the cuts have all ready started. Captial Replacement ( replacing computers , lab equipment and other capital items ) has been cancelled for this year. So items that are 3 -4 years old and were to be replaced must now last at least another year. So yep the place is falling behind from that standpoint.
They are starting to become a real University now .... with all the associated problems as well as accolades.

Hopefully they will not get hooked on start-up funds for growth in outlying areas as well as new programs, feeding the main campus.
