13-year-old Heather Caldwell has good reason to smile...

The grade eight student at 100 Mile Junior Secondary School won the provincial spelling bee championship in Vancouver last month, and, today, begins her journey to the national competition in Ottawa.  An exciting trip for a teen who's never been further east than Saskatchewan.

Caldwell says it was her English teacher, Mrs. Yaniw, who encouraged her to take an interest in spelling bees.

She won the B.C. competition, after 19 rounds, by correctly spelling 'teleological'.

The format in Ottawa will be the same.  "It's a spelldown," says the teen, "The competition is really tough because you've got the best in Canada there."

Caldwell says she's been studying hard and her mom has been helping with spelling drills.

A total of 28 competitors will be taking part in the event which goes this Wednesday in our national capital.  As part of Heather's B.C. win, she received an invitation to compete in a spelling bee in Washington, D.C., as well.
