In the near future, Prince George residents will, in all likelihood, be buying  eggs that  were produced by prairie chickens.

Allan Croft recently bought the bulk of Veeken's Eggs quota. Croft, a broiler producer in the Fraser Valley, is expected to build a facility , move the quota to the Fraser Valley and then sell the new production of eggs through the distribution center in Surrey.

Veeken's Eggs, who sold the quota for more than $8 million dollars, had been the only egg producer in BC where the stores were buying directly from the Grader, in this case, Veeken's. All of the other eggs produced  in the province are sold through the Surrey distribution center.

According to officials of the British Columbia Egg Marketing Board, it is expected this region will now be serviced by egg production from the prairies. At present , 10% of the eggs consumed in British Columbia are coming from prairie producers and the Egg Marketing Board says it makes sense that in this area it would be easier to bring those eggs in from the prairies.

Meantime the former quota owned by Veekens would be swallowed up in the lower mainland.

The number of jobs that will be affected by this move is not known at this time.
