Goonery- is the practice of hiring tough guys to beat up on the opposition. Outside of the NHL, the only other place where this is allowed and encouraged is in the military and the mafia.
In this day and age, when we are teaching our youth the wrongs of bullying and advocating on behalf of ending violence, I find it extremely disturbing that our Mayor and Council would agree to host an event which exploits violence, as a form of entertainment.
I encourage Mayor and Council, as civic leaders, and landlords of the CN Centre, to sit with Leisure Services and the Prince George Athletic Commission and examine the long-term negative impact and moral wrongs of hosting the goonery event will have on our city, our youth and the overall vision, mission and core values of Council.
It may take many years for Prince George to recover from the negative image which our city will acquire from hosting the – Battle of the Hockey Enforcers, especially since no other morally conscientious-minded jurisdiction in Canada will.
Do we want our tax dollars supporting such a degrading conduct? Where does that lead a civil society?
