Prince George Public Library is in line for $36,600 dollars of Provincial funding, as long as it agrees to take part in the One Card Program.
Under the program, you would register with your home library. The "One Card" would allow you to then pick up a book at a Vancouver library, read it on the way home to Prince George, then drop it off at the P.G. Library to be returned to Vancouver.
The Prince George Library Board has yet to decide if it will take part in the program. "The $36,600 is unexpected revenue" says Board Chair Bill Kennedy, "But there are unexpected expenses associated with the OneCard system."
It is not clear if the dollars would be enough to cover the cost of sorting, and shipping materials back to their home librarires.
The Prince George Library Board meets next week for it's regular meeting. The One Card system will be one of the items on the agenda.
The OneCard program is already up and running on the Lower Mainland and on parts of the Sunshine Coast.
The government’s goal is to have public libraries throughout B.C. on the OneCard system by 2008.
Librairies can only get the dollars if they commit to taking part in the One Card program.
Today's announcement from the Province sets aside $3.25 million to be distributed throughout the province for the program.
