Gas prices took another jump today as Petro Can led the way in the city marking up regular gasoline to an all time high of 114.9 cents a litre.

That translates into $5.17 cents a gallon for those who still think in the old gallon terms.

A 45 gallon drum of gas now costs $262.65 cents.

The price has risen 7cents a litre in the past week.

An American motor home driver, fueling up on his way to Alaska said,"Don’t be surprised if you don’t see as many US tourists up here this year , I figured it out in US dollars and US gallons and the price works out to $4.23 a gallon .  Never mind insurance or anything else just gas alone is costing me $33.84 cents an hour. My wife just got off the computer sending off E mails to people down south telling them about what the price of gas is here."

Its expected gas will hit $3.50 US a gallon in California this summer , which will result in a lot of people staying close to home.

The price in Whitehorse (the direction he was heading) was $119.9 cents a litre on Wednesday.

We must not forget that gasoline prices in the USA are going up at the same time. The main difference between the two countries is the amount of tax put on the commodity.

We have had this difference for decades. Just that now everyone is starting to become more aware of the price.

If Canada thinks that this is a major cause of US tourists not coming here, then Canada may wish to institute a program such as Italy had several decades ago when I was travelling Europe by car - coupons one could purchase at the border which were available to non residents of Italy only which reduced the price to that approaching the neighbouring country. I forget the difference in price, but it was probably similar to the difference between the USA and Canada.

This article is over half a year old, but we really need to remember that North America subsidizes the environmental damages caused by vehicular transpotation systems through other taxes or not at all and will have to pay for the damages in the future - such as climate change.

As BTO sings "You ain't seen nothing yet" Funny how Petro Can is the first to go up all the time. Check out www.gasbuddies.com for high and low prices in BC and the rest of North America.
The Green Party advocates a doubling or tripling of gasoline prices through extra taxation! The idea is to drastically reduce consumption and thereby the emission of greenhouse gases - sooner, rather than later when it may be too late!
I think the green party is right. It has worked in Europe. They are working on a compeltely different level than North America when it comes to gasoline consumption. Did anyone see the one hour CNN program on this last night? I knew Ethanol was big in Brazil. They started that program when the USA started the 55MPH program. They are just about to become self sufficient in gasoline which is more like 85% Ethanol by now. Of course, what they do not say is how much of the Amazon jungle they have had to cut down and how many Indigenous people thay had to displace.

I guess as we saw in North America, there is a price to pay for "development" and this country was lucky in that it developed its hinterlands before the eyes of the world were able to watch with modern communication technology.
