National victims of crime awareness week poster
Although this is the first day of the National Victims of Crime week, the official launch won't take place until tomorrow morning as the Attorney General and Minister for Public Safety head into a full day symposium on victim issues.
The week is meant to spread the word about services available to all who suffer when crime takes place.
RCMP Victim Services Co-ordinator, Wendy Milligan says "When a crime occurs, it doesn't just affect one person, the entire community, family, friends and neighbours feel the impact." She adds "It is important to know that victims have a voice in our justice system and that there are services and laws in place to help."
In Prince George, there is assistance available to victims of crime through :
RCMP Victim Services at 561-3329
Native Healing Centre Victim Services at 564 4324
Elizabeth Fry Specialized Victim Services at 563-1113
Members of the community are encouraged to find out more about victim services by visiting the Government's web site at www.victimsweek.gc.ca . You can also help by volunteering to help victims, by referring victims for service and assistance, and by being a source of personal support for victims of crime.
