School District 57 has a new welcoming sign.
Carved by Peter George with the help of students from John McInnis School, it depicts the four Clans in the region, the Bear, The Grouse, the Frog and the Caribou. It also shows an eagle which First Nations consider a sign of protection and a representation of their judicial system, and a salmon, a symbol of wealth and prosperity. In this case says George, the salmon symbolizes the ability to provide for the future through students.
Preparing to unveil the new sign are, from l-r , Gloria George, Ben Berland, Grace Duncan, Bill Christie,
Peter George, Ernie Gouchie and School Superintendant Dick Chambers
The carving, says Peter George, was nearly "finished" several times over the past year as his over enthusiastic efforts carved a little too much off the plank.
Ben Berland commented that at one time, education was viewed as a tool to be used against Aboriginals. He sees this sign as a symbol of new partnerships.
Board of Trustees Chair, Bill Christie says he wants it to be clear that Aboriginal students are important to the School District and the District will work hard to ensure those students succeed. Christie also promised this special work of art will be encased in order to ensure it is protected from the elements.
