It’s Back!

Senior Lacrosse action returns for another  great season, tonight at the Prince George Coliseum.

This year the league will feature five teams with the addition of the Kitimat Alcan Pioneers. The PGSLA is a senior ‘C’ lacrosse league comprised of five teams: the Capabilities Stylers, Panago Assault, Steamers Pub Devils and the Westwood/Excel Bandits as well as the team from Kitimat.

The inclusion of the Pioneers means the teams will now have a travel schedule to contend with as the four Prince George based teams will play a pair of games in Kitimat and the Pioneers will have to make two trips to Prince George to return the favour. The Pioneers will make their first trip to Prince George to play the Bandits and the Assault on May 20th & 21st. Kitimat will host the Capabilities Stylers on May 13th & 14th, the Devils on May 27th & 28th, the Assault on June 3rd & 4th, and then the Bandits on June 17th & 18th.

Although all five teams will start the season with a clean slate and an equal opportunity at winning the League Championship; the early favourite still has to be the Steamers Pub Devils, especially given their success in recent seasons. Along with three straight regular season championship banners, the Devils are two-time defending PGSLA Playoff Champions. The Steamers Pub Devils have also laid claim to the Alcan Cup in 2004 and 2005 as well as winning silver in 2004 and gold at the 2005 Provincial Championship.

The Westwood/Excel Bandits may be the top contenders after the Devils, given the fact  they were the only ones to beat the Devils in the past two seasons. The Bandits will be led by last year’s scoring leader and League MVP, Jesse Huffman.

Meanwhile the Panago Assault is also deserving of consideration after facing the Devils in the finals in both 2004 and 2005. Team captain, David Keough will be looking for the 2005 playoff scoring leader, Clarke Anderson, to light the lamp for the Panago Assault.

A team rich in youthful energy, the Capabilities Stylers will be looking to play the role of underdog all the way through the season and into the playoffs after finishing the 2005 season in fourth place winning only 4 games.

This season’s wild card of course will be the Kitimat Alcan Pioneers, a team rich in lacrosse history and always up for the challenge of competing hard in the “War on the Floor.”

The Prince George Coliseum will be the venue for the PGSLA regular season games. The first night of action is tonight with a double header featuring the four Prince George based teams.

Action gets underway with the Steamers Pub Devils and the Westwood/Excel Bandits locking horns at 6pm followed by a matchup between the Panago Assault and Capabilities Stylers at 8pm.

Advance season passes are available from each team for a cost of $30.00 or from Ron Edgar, PGSLA Treasurer.

Season passes will also be available at the gate tonight. Single game tickets are $5.00, but for opening night only, one game ticket is all you need to  stay and enjoy both games.

For more information on season passes contact Ron Edgar (250) 614 4606.
