Highway 16 is about to get a face lift.

Pittman Asphalt  has been awarded a $3.2 million dollar contract to resurface Highway 16 through Prince George  from Gauthier/ Bunce intersection near the west end of the city and extending to the Old Cariboo intersection near the east end of the city for a length of 17 kilometers.

The project will be undertaken in three phases;

  • Phase 1 Old Cariboo highway intersection to the First Ave and Victoria intersection and section between 15th and Victoria.
  • Phase 2 First Ave and Victoria intersection through downtown Prince George to the Highway 97 and highway 16 intersection.
  • Phase 3 from the Highway 97 and 16 intersection to the Gauthier/ Bunce intersection.

Phase 1 will begin in June of this year and be completed by September; phases 2 and 3 will be completed in subsequent years.

Because the entire project is a four lane highway the project will not require any roads to be shut down.

The province is responsible for the paving and maintenance of all major highways passing through the city. Work in the down town core will be limited to night work.

Well, finally.

Let's hope that the City will likewise resurface the remainder of First Avenue to Carney Street (including the suspension busting section of Carney Street where it joins up with First Avenue) and the remainder of 5th Avenue.

(One can always hope).
