Heading in to what is, for many  people of the region, the first weekend of camping, the  Ministry of the Evironment has issued a notice advising people to be "bear aware".

With bears out of hibernation, and looking for food sources,  a "heads up" may be necessary for some campers.

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service says we are to be reminded that the bears are hungry, on the prowl for food and in the case of females, they are often accompanied by cubs. They will aggressively defend their offspring.

The Ministry is advising you check out the Bear Smart brochure for  tips  that  should reduce the chances of a close encounter of the bear kind.  You can view the brochure here.

I went out to the Hubble Homestead last weekend to run the dog along the river. I pulled into the parking lot and thought I saw a moose. As I drove closer I realized it was a massive 1000 pound + grizzly bear. He walked up to the front of my truck and just stared at me. When I went to do down the window he moved off to the edge of the bush. I drove forward to see the gate was closed. Sat there for a minute in the truck with the 1000 pound monster watching me from about 100 feet away. I figured if I let the dog out of the truck he is as good as dead, so I turned the truck around and went elsewhere to walk the dog. The grizzlies are eating up the elk out that way like candy growing into massive monsters. I fear someone else will stumble across this bear on opening weekend this weekend. It looked me eyeball to eyeball as I sat in my truck and its back was at least 5’5” and it was almost as round as a VW Beetle. Its the first time a wild animal has ever put the run on me.

Heads up for sure.
