Weather Helps Battle Fires
By 250 News
Cooler weather over the weekend helped the Prince George Fire District battle three fires.
With rain throughout most of the region at one time or another over the weekend the cool wet days mean crews are being demobilized from the three major fires at:
Northbend Creek, 45 km sw of Vanderhoof
Naglico Lake, 200 km sw of Prince George, and from the fire north of Batnuni Lake, which is about 100 km sw of Prince George.
The Prince George Fire Centre says the fires will remain under patrol.
The fire danger rating throughout most of the Prince George Fire Centre region is low to moderate.
Two restrictions have now been lifted in the Peace Forest District of the Prince George Fire Centre. Backyard burning (category 2) and industrial burning (category3) are once again allowed in the Peace Forest District. Although the bans have been lifted, there is a still a need to have a burn registration number for any Category 3 open burning.
There are two new problem areas. Crews are being sent to two brush fires, one near Dawson Creek, the other, near Fort St. John.
Last year, there were a total of 964 wildfires in the province, that was the first time the fire number had been under 1,000 since the mid 70’s.
In 2005, flames ate up 34,952 hectares and cost about $50 million dollars to extinguish. Historically the average fire season in B.C. destroys nearly 50 thousand hectares, and costs $87.5 million.
