Public Hearing for Liquor Store for 5th - Ospika

An application to have a land use contract ammendment for the corner of  5th and Ospika in Prince George will have a chance to go before a public hearing.

The applicants would like to add a liquor store to the building already on that site. City staff say the application should be denied because  there are similar facilities within a set kilometer range, there have also been concerns about parking, and concerns expressed by the RCMP.

Still, Mayor Kinsley says he is surprised the RCMP have made some comments which is unusual on this kind of application.  As for the parking concerns, the Mayor points out there has been both a convenience store and video store at the site for years, so parking cannot be a new concern.

Council has approved moving the application forward for first and second reading in order to have the item go before a public hearing.

"As for the parking concerns, the Mayor points out there has been both a convenience store and video store at the site for years, so parking cannot be a new concern."

Exactly. It is not a new concern. I has been a concern for a long time as far as I can recall. It is a very dangerous neighbourhood shopping area to access since it is so close to a corner with very little space to maneuver once you are on the parking lot. It is a poor design from a traffic safety point of view without a doubt.
Give it up. We got enough bars and booze stores allready. The reason the RCMP made coments is simple ,they have enough to do now.Lets real lower the cost of our homes by allowing ever Tom, Dick and Harry to open a liquor storeright next to us.I found it very interesting that the local pubs real supported our Mayor on the last election. If this passes it will be high time for a changing of city concil again.
As others have said, parking IS an issue at that complex. It is my 'corner store' when I need something quick and there have been many times that its impossible to maneuver around, or things are quite squished.

How many liquor stores do we require in that area? There is one at 1st & Tabor, Spruceland, 15th & Central, and Alfredo's on 15th. Should that not suffice for all the alcoholic needs of the area?

I would absolutely not support putting another one in at that location.

lunarguy: That is unfortunate what happened to your teammate, however, I have never once had an issue at all with Mr. G's. And, I have had to use their washroom on occasion. Maybe it is because I am a somewhat regular customer, but I always have found that their regular staff are extremely friendly.
I agree that a liquor store in this location should be a no go. The town in inundated with liquor stores as it is, and hardly needs more. Being directly across the street from the Regional RCMP'S district offices, might mean that the problems associated with a major liquor store would be in their face on a continuing basis and they would have to deal with all the associated problems.

In any event its hardly needed and will add nothing to the neibourhood, which I might add has slowly been deteriating especially in the 5th and Ospika areas in the last 10 years. We need to do something to spruce this area up, I doubt if a liquor store is the answer.
One point has been missed and that is it provides more tax dollars for the Mayor to travel. Why would anyone want shop at for wine or beer at the inflated prices that are charged at these outlets.
Prices are lower at the LCB store and the selection is even better.
Interesting my comment about the Mr.G's washroom was deleted along with the rest of the post.
Lunar I read it. I saw no harm in the post.
I just wish the moderators would at least then send the poster a email message explaining what they did. Not like they don't have our email addresses :)

lunarguy, I would imagine that it would fall in the libel and slander category.

I am not saying your statement was not true, however, it cannot be proven, correct?

In the statement you directly named Mr. G's, and a location within the actual complaint. This is defamation if the complaint is untrue. It could cause the business to lose business and/or to lose its reputation in the community.

Since the moderators would have no way of substatiating your claim, they would remove the post because of libel and slander laws.

Now, if you were to phrase your complaint in another way, without directly naming the store (or individual) then the slander and libel laws do not come into effect. Or, of course, you can substantiate the claim.

Funny how a person can't complain about the service at a business but they all like it when we comment on how great service was. Oh well, no worries.

Sorry, my post showed up twice for some reason!

Sorry, my post showed up twice for some reason!

I posted a not so nice comment about a local car dealer several months back.
Although the story was 100% true, they deleted it as it could be taken as slanderous.
I then got an email telling me it was deleted, and possible slander fallout was the reason why.
I think for the most part they do a great job here at 250, and they bring us more "useful" news in many ways than the 3 papers that get delivered to my house.
The 250 staff tries hard, but yes "our" opinins may vary from theres on occasion.

Any care to meet say every friday at noon at the BX and discuss issues like liquor sales on 5th ave?
