This in Environment Week, and the City of Prince George is  taking part in the Commuter Challenge in an effort to  reduce  emissions.

The plan is,  residents make a committment to take a bus, walk,  jog, take a bike, car pool, whatever it takes to  reduce  emissions.  Then register your efforts and the distance traveled by  visiting  www.commuterchallenge.ca

You can  enjoy a 25 cent bus ride in Prince George Wednesday and Thursday of this week all you have to do is pick  up a "Go Green " button from City Hall, or the libraries and Koops Bike Shop to qualify for the cheap fare.

The Provincial Ministry of the  Environment has also posted  a top ten list  of things we can do to reduce pollution:

1.      Bike to work, car pool, use mass transit, or walk.

2.      When driving, keep tires well inflated and organize trips to reduce driving distances—never let your car idle.

3.      Conserve water – do not leave taps running when brushing your teeth.
4.      Run dishwashers, washers and dryers with full loads during low energy hours, late in the evening or early in the morning.  Choose short cycles, low water levels and low heat settings whenever possible.
5.      When shopping, avoid products that are packaged for single use (i.e., drinks, school lunches, candy, cat and dog food, salad mixings, etc.). Instead, buy in bulk and transfer the products to your own reusable containers.
6.      Separate and recycle your garbage – paper, plastics and bottles and compost perishable waste.
7.      Use sensor lights or solar lights if you need outdoor lights on at night.
8.      Use natural methods to fertilize and protect plants from pests and conserve water by covering plant beds with composted leaves or grass to help retain moisture.
9.      Conserve water by cutting lawns less frequently and watering less.
10.  Manage hazardous wastes such as paint and batteries by taking them to a proper disposal facility.
Today is World Environment Day, while Wednesday is Clean Air Day.

Why doesn't the Provincial Ministry of the Environment draft their own top 10 list of things they can do to reduce the major causes of air polution in our communities?

For example: No more slash burning. Just say no to all burning. Hall it away, grind it up, bury it, chip it.

I find it ironic that as a homeowner, I am unable to light a little back yard burn pit to sit around roasting weiners and marshmallows, yet someone up near the jail can light a pile up and cause the entire bowl to be choked by the smoke generated by it. Someone authorized it and it should be stopped immediately.

I cannot in clear conscience be to concerned about the 10 recommendations listed above when we have such blatant causes of a significant nature dumping polution all over and around us. They need to give their heads a shake and get them out of the smoke. Chester
