Cost to Repair Jail Seems...Criminal

We may be casting our eyes in the air at any prospect of being forced to pay the Promoter of the Hockey fights show, (that scenario however is only a "maybe" and a big maybe at that) yet no one seems to be blinking over the fact we as taxpayers are about to peel off 5.3 million dollars (an estimate only at this point) to repair the Prince George Regional Correctional Center.

That estimated repair bill for the "Hilton on the Hill" is more than 10% of the original cost of the facility.

The cost of that building will now balloon to $50 million dollars from what was originally supposed to cost $32 million. If anyone operated their business in that manner, they would be fired on the spot.

It is not the present Liberal Government that is responsible for this one. The former NDP government as you may remember had Kraft Construction out of Winnipeg build the structur.  There was one comment at the time that went like this "While our trades sat around with their hands in their pockets, out- of-towners were swinging hammers."
Unfortunately however it is those same trades who stayed in B.C. and stuck out the lean yearsm who are being called to pay the bill for the screw up.

Now the description of the problem is that it is "similar to the leaky condos".  Didn’t we know what was causing that problem back then, and if so, where is the liability to the former builders and designers?

$5.3 million may not be a lot of money when you say it fast, but it would go along way to fixing many roads, which by the way we skipped in order to construct other facilities in the city at the time.

The architectural company for the "Hilton" was "Weisman, Dewar, Grout and Carter"  now known as Stantec. Now isn’t that the same firm that has been retained to re- do the zoning by-laws for the City of Prince George?

For $5.3 million, someone should be brought to task and at present there have been no suggestions as to who might be responsible.

That, is one man's opinion.

That "Hilton on the Hill" will undergo repairs with our tax dollars. The original contractor may get the contract, but you can rest assured he will be the recipient of the millions of dollars required to effect repairs.
I really am thankful we have had an announcement the Liberal Gov't in Victoria shows a 2.6 BILLION surplus. Wonder whose pockets that money came out of? Yes siree, right on, we gave it willingly too. 5.3 million is small potatoes out of 2.6 billion.
Does anyone ever wonder how Governments can, in good conscience, keep ripping off the taxpayer, and squandering the money at their will. Have we really come such a long way from the "barons" and "serf" days?? We will "never" even own the land we sit on, as if we do not pay property taxes yearly to the "powers that be," that will be taken away from us. I put this in as a friendly reminder folks. Time to pay up again-property taxes due and payable by or on July 8. Happy holidays!!!
