Gun Legislation Changes to Be Released
By 250 News
Federal Minister of Public Safety, Stockwell Day, will release his government’s plan on the Firearms Registry later today.
He has scheduled a news conference for 12:30 Prince George time when it is expected he will outline the planned legislation many expect will be the blue print for the dismantling of the billion dollar registry.
There won’t be enough time for the House of Commons to pass any legislation before the summer recess begins (this Friday) so the legislation is expected to be dealt with this fall.
The break will also allow the minority government to try and win over some votes from other parties in order to have the legislation pass. Members of the opposition, primarily those from urban constituencies, have said they will not support the dismantling of the gun registry.
The legislation is expected to abolish the registration of long guns but maintain the decades old restrictions on handguns and certain assault weapons.
