Big Brothers Big Sisters will be one of the new tenants in the old Safeway building recently purchased by the City of Prince George.

The organization has broken its ties with Value Village which is located in the old Overwaitea building across from Parkwood Mall.

The new business will be known as Big Deals and will open in August.

The City purchased the building at 4th and Victoria at a cost of $2,774,000 million dollars from its Vancouver owners.  The building had been divided into two sections with The Good time Bingo Hall occupying one half of the structure and Continuing Education the other.

Ian Wells of Real Estate Services says the new venture will be paying $5,853.28 per month, exactly the same amount of lease cost as the previous tenants, School District 57.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters could apply to the City for a tax exemption on the property taxes, but not until next year. All grants of this nature must be presented to Council. The total tax bill this year is $20,301.34 with that amount being divided equally between the Bingo Hall and the School District.

Some concern had been expressed by some down town businesspeople that the director of the new facility, Sandy Whitwham, is the wife of the head of The City of Prince George's  Administrative Services, but commercial realtors say the deal put together between the City and Big Brothers –Big Sisters on the surface appears to be a reasonable one for the city.

Great idea. Time we quit supporting those Americans with their Valu Villages. No offense-nothing against Americans, but it is time to keep the money on the home front. I wish "Big Deals" ,(lousy name tho'), every success in this venture. I believe the residents of this city will support them. I hope so!!
Well I'd rather see Big Brother and Sisters getting the deal over anyone else.

That said from an annuity perspective for the city its only 1% over 50 years if they have the whole building, but 4% over 50 years if they have half the building.

I guess its kind of a neutral position until something develops?
