There is some good news coming out of the Cariboo, as the fire situation has eased.

New reports say the Dean Fire, the fire near the Nazko Valley and fire north of Narcosli have all become less active allowing crews time to build a fire guard and get ready for possible burn off activities.

The Dean Fire is still holding at 12000 hectares and the fire near Nazko is holding at 9000 hectares. The fire near Narcosli Lake has been more accurately mapped at just less than 12000 hectares. Now that the intensity of these fires has weakened and visibility has improved, fire management teams have been able to plot smaller fires that have been burning in the vicinity of the larger fires.

The more accurate mapping has allowed for resources to be redistributed to where they are needed most.

There are hopes the weather will cooperate with cooler temperatures expected for the week ahead, along with  calm winds and the possibility of some more rainn.

There is no Cariboo campfire ban in effect at this time, though everyone is being advised to be extremely careful with campfires.  There is a campfire ban in the Prince George Fire Centre

The Nazko Highway is now reopened, though it is being patrolled. The travel restriction in the Dean River Road area is still in effect and the Itcha Ilgachuz Park remains closed until further notice.

The Cariboo Fire Centre has reported 62 new fires since Sunday’s storm; of these, 58 were started by lightning strikes. Most of the fires were small spot fires.
