Two members of the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit out of Vancouver were  called into action in Prince George this weekend as a grenade was discovered in the north end of the city.

Residents tearing down an old shed on Fox Drive  were using a pitchfork to level the ground after removing the building boards, when what appeared to be a grenade became wedged between two of the tines on the fork.  They called police after a neighbour confirmed it was in fact a grenade.

Police attended to the scene and determined the the fuse, or ignition device had been removed, however they were concerned there may still be some gunpowder in the outer casing.

The owner of a nearby gravel pit gave permission for the police to bring the grenade to the pit where it was encased in an explosive charge, buried in the pit and exploded.

The grenade was stamped "1943" making it World War Two vintage.  There are no concerns of any other explosives in the area, as it is believed the grenade was likely in the earth before the shed was built over it.
