Sentence for Extortion Set for Friday
By 250 News
Mathew Garfield will have to wait a few more days before he will know what his sentence will be for two counts of extortion.
The Crown wants the Court to send a strong message and has asked for 5 years. That would mirror the time being served by Lea Perrinni, who was sentenced earlier this year. She is the young woman who handed out the violent punishment to those who owed her drug money. One person was tazered, another attacked with an axe.
Garfield's lawyer is calling for time served and probation, noting Garfield has no previous record, is not violent, and is "follower, not a leader". His lawyer also pointed out that while Garfield may have videotaped the punishment he was not an active participant. Garfield has been incustody since last September.
Garfield addressed the Court saying he is not a violent person and if he could change the events of the past he would. He also apologized to the two victims for any grief they may have suffered.During the trial, the Court was told how crack houses were being set up in residential areas of Prince George. The Court also heard how one person who owed $170 dollars, had a finger cut off when he was only able to pay back half of the amount he owed during the specified time frame.
Two other young men were also tried. Scott Payne was found guilty of two charges of extortion but not guilty of obstructing justice by witness tampering, he will be sentenced in September. The third young man tried was Lorne McConnell. He was found not guilty of obstructing justice.
Garfield's sentence will be delivered Friday morning at 9:30.
