Premier Gordon Campbell today released a statement celebrating the contributions of B.C. Sikhs to local communities and to B.C.’s history and prosperity.

The Premier noted today marks the anniversary of a regrettable event in B.C. history, when on July 23rd 1914, 376 passengers from India aboard the Komagata Maru were forcibly driven from Vancouver harbour.

"The plight of the Komagata Maru and her passengers remains to this day a cause of deep regret for British Columbia, its people and its government. But it also stands as a reminder of just how far we have come as a province and a society in the 92 years since. Today, the painful memory of the Komagata Maru inspires us all to continue to build on our nation’s reputation as a land that embraces tolerance above intolerance, diversity above discrimination, and openness above exclusion,” stated Premier Campbell.

"We are a stronger, better province and country than we were 92 years ago, and we are better and stronger precisely because of the contribution of all those who have crossed oceans to share this land. So today we mark with regret the tragedy of the Komagata Maru, but we also celebrate the fact that we are now the nation those 376 souls believed we could be."

Now we can all sit back and breathe a gigantic sigh of relief that this matter has been exposed and handled with the politically correct apologies.
I am just so relieved Campbell shared this with us.
Must have made somebody's day?
What a Bunch of BullS.it.
Maybe we could deal with the issues of the day, instead of digging up every social injustice that happened generations ago and apologizing for it centuries later. If it happened 92 years ago, chances are that the people involved are all dead and his apologies fell on deaf ears that don't have a clue what the faq he is talking about.

Is it just me or does anybody else feel that the government should have plenty of work to keep them busy, just dealing with today's issues ?
So illegals were stopped....
and for that we have to be sorry....
ok....sorry the laws were what and are what they are.....live with it....
And the posts above illustrate why it is so necessary to correct past mistakes, so those of the sme ilk can't ever do it again.
Once upon a time I was in the Sikh temple on Ross Street in Vancouver for some reason, and I was looking at the pictures on the wall in the basement. One picture had a "hero-sense" about it. It was a picture of the guy who killed the captain of the Komagata Maru. That was over 25 years ago when I saw it , and it stuck in my mind. A rebuttal of either affirmation or denial would be welcome.
And the posts above illustrate why it is so necessary to correct past mistakes, so those of the sme ilk can't ever do it again.

sme ilk ? Whatever this is ??

Politicians aren't paid to page through history books and try to correct every social injustice ever committed, as perceived by today's standards.
Like one commentator said, sorry things were what they were at the time, but it was not personally our fault and look...we have learned, and become better people and advanced as a civilization. We don't think like that no more, they did in the past, but we don't now. Isn't that kind of an admission that people were wrong at the time, that we have abandoned that way of thinking as being flawed ? An apology would maybe be necessary if we had done it last week, not last century.

However, let me correct now the biggest social injustice ever committed, one of the biggest racial injustices ever committed, and to my knowledge, the only completely successful genocide in recent recorded history.

Going back even many more centuries, let me now apologize to all of Cro-Magnon Man, for being let to starve and die off, extinct forever, by my distant and despicable relatives, Australopithicus.

There are no surviving blood relatives to accept the apology, but I feel better having said it, and right yet another ancient wrong.

I am hoping that when we get done with all this, we can actually catch up and address the issues of today.

As a last act of personal conscience cleansing, I apologize to anyone if I got drunk and p'd on your lawn without asking.
;-P
Actually unreasonableman, Australopithecines apparently never left Africa. It was Cro Magnon man (Homo sapiens) our species who was the immigrant into Europe when Neanderthal man went extinct because of changes in climate. There is no evidence that our species killed them, in fact, one very common belief is that they were absorbed into the European gene pool through intermarriage. So there may well be descendants to accept your apology, and I do so with thanks. ;-)
Wow, that headline for news sure produced a pile of garbage.
Must have been more newsworthy than I was giving it credit for.
I actually thought it was just a tad more than outright stupid?
Woe is me?
Its the heat.
I had never heard of this. So I had to do a bit of exploring.

Sounds to me that in those days people could come to Canada without papers to allow them in. In this case they required $200 per person (fair or not) and it appears that 24 were eventually let in since they probably managed to get the money together.

So, there were no illegals. They would have been illegal if they jumped ship and had no $200. Does not sound like anyone did that.

Also, ministers of the crown do not typically spend time to dig this sort of stuff up. It normally happens through years of lobbying from the aggrieved parties.

I think appologies are given all over for the way people were handled by this province and this one should not have been excluded. I think the fact which escapes people is that the government of BC is almost 150 years old and, like a person, is responsible for past actions. It is not as if this is a new province created 30 years ago. I do not think there are any statutes of limitation.

As ammonra says, there are too many posters on here who are trying hard to come accross as a bunch of yahoos from a gritty mill town. You guys are probably all a bunch of pussycats in real life.

;-)
IT is to Bad we do not have the balls to do the same with Illegals today. Owl I am not a mill worker or a yahoo, and I just do not lean to the far right like you, and I use my real name when making a post, what is your excuse for hiding behind a Birds name, are you a person who only has comments if they can speak from a hiding place??? SCARED TO STAND UP FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN????
The real upside of the story is that Premier Gordon Campbell has finally done something that
ammonra can agree with. Miracles still happen!

I checked to see if ammonra called anybody a yahoo from a gritty milltown. He didn't.

He simply called them "those of the sme ilk."

Cheers!
I am truly stricken!
Owl has exposed me as a "Yahoo" from a gritty mill town, and ammonra pegs us all as being of the same ilk.
I am filled with remorse for not realizing apologies for some stupid deed going back over NINE decades is of great importance.
Forgive us ignorant Yahoos, oh great bird of the night, but there are periods of darkness which many of us endure who are not quite so enlightened as yourself.
And research is left for those with nothing of any importance to do. (Boring life).
Maybe you ought to get one-a life that is.
Me to. (From the same ilk) Hee hee!
Hey Don,

I hardly call coming on an internet site and posting my opinions as standing up for what I believe in.

If you think you are standing up for what you believe in by posting here, I have three simple words for you:

GET A LIFE!
Does the B stand for BULLS-ITER.
Well, diplomat, you at least noticed that I supported Campbell on this one, but it is not the first time as you appear to believe. I supported the Citizen's Assembly too. That's twice I've agreed with Campbell now, proof that miracles do happen and, judging from the temperatures, Hell is still hot. lol
I learned about the Komagat Maru many years ago, in research history of my home town.

Although we can`t keep apologizing for errors of the past, this was just blatant racism, plain and simple.

I didn`t vote for you last time, but I appreciate the fact that we are owning up to one of the two biggest racial oopsses this Province has ever made.

Thanks Gordo!!!!
Nope Don.
It stands for "bewitched, bothered and bewildered." Take your pick!
Just guessing.
No offence!
Damn-heat might have gotten to me!
I am not a yahoo from a mill town or anything else like that, I have held several positions of high and trusted authority, am extremely well educated, and in three different disciplines.
I also have a degree in real life.

I re-iterate, we have our hands full making plans for the future and addressing the issues of today.
We cannot go back and re-write history exactly the way we would have had it play out with today's views.
the reasonable man and I both have three disciplines. Mine are: I drag my ass outa bed every morning , go to work, AND pay too many taxes. If them ain't disciplines, I don't know what are. oh, yeah, I am also a high school graduate!
P.S. I am trustworthy too, like reasonableman 'cause I aint never been in jail. So there. i.e. trusted but no authority. Bummer, eh?
The most important reason for giving apologies for past Provincial or National abuses of groups in our Society is an ethical one, i.e. it is the right thing to do. Acknowledging guilt and taking responsibility are important for it to be put into the past and cease being an important issue to those members of the affected group (in this case Sikh). For those who are affected it can be of great importance, and apologising on behalf of the state shows that Gordon Campbell is aware of, and accepts, the importance of dealing with feelings like that.

It is interesting that we constantly hear complaints of politicians being unethical and self serving and all that other negative stuff, but when one behaves in an exemplary and ethical manner, as Gordon Campbell just did, then many of the same people complaining in those terms turn around and criticise that admirable and ethical behavior. It is almost as if they are not happy without some political target to attack. In the Uk people like that are called "Antis", because they are anti-this, anti-that, anti-everything.

If ethics is no justification for proper behavior, then perhaps a crass self interest argument will satisfy them. If people are happy with BC they are more likely to invest their money in the Province. More investment usually helps the economy, and we all benefit. Maybe the apology will eventually lead to saving a dollar or two on the critics taxes.
Oh gimme a break , ammonra!
You sound like "puff the magic Dragon."
I'll be damned if I care a fiddler's passing of wind what took place and who was offended 90 plus years ago.
At a buck or two a throw savings on tax dollars, you are going to have to drum up one hell of a lot of apologies to make anything of any consequence worth while.
I guess in the UK you are just inclined to be more politically correct than yahoos and people of our ilk, daring to live and attempt to breathe in this gritty little mill town.
No offense! Well, almost none?
This is just a gritty little mill town, isn't it? Even the "train don't stop here no more".
I hit a nail on the head again, I see.
Yeah, ammonra, better stop hitting yourself on the head-it will feel so good when you quit.
You sound like "puff the magic Dragon."

Somebody pass the bong, so I can understand these points..????

Lip service, lip service, lip service, same old NDP soother.
Praising Gordon Campbell is the "same old NDP soother"? Really? I think you already used the bong, matey!
;-)
