Child and Mother Reunited

A two year old girl, found wandering the neighbourhood of First and Ospika early Saturday morning, has been reunited with her mother.

Police say a relative got news of a child being found and wondered if it was the 23 month old daughter of her niece.  Seems the woman had been trying to contact her niece and couldn't make a connection. A meeting was set up  between the woman and the Ministry of Children and Families who brought photos of the child for the relative to view.  The relative made a positive i.d. late Sunday afternoon.

Seems the mother and child had stopped at a relative's house for the night.  The mother left the apartment before midnight, assuming the little girl would stay in bed.  The child, who is very bright, opened the apartment door and left the building unbeknownst to the other adult, the renter of the apartment, who was sleeping.

In the morning, the renter  wakes up to find a note from the mother indicating she had gone to spend the night with friends.  The assumption was made that the mother had taken the child with her, so the renter went to work thinking nothing of it.  Meantime, the mother thinks the renter is looking after her daughter.

Everything started falling back into place when the aunt got wind of a child that had been found wandering the neighbourhood.

"the mother thinks the renter is looking after her daughter". The Aunt has to know more than she is letting on.
The plot thickens..eh?
So the mother takes off to a friend's place at night. Maybe she had a phone call and was not planning on this. Then again, maybe it was planned all along. Take advantage of free babysitting services without asking for that.

Seems reasonable enough. Child is left with the mother's aunt. Also reasonable enough.

To me the thing falls apart when the mother does not return in the morning or sometime during the day and the aunt has talk to the Ministry. Could be that the mother may have planned to return, but was in no condition to do so. Not even a phone call appears to have been made. Maybe she did not know the Aunt had to work.

The aunt made the positive ID late Sunday afternoon. So where was the mother late Sunday afternoon? She obviously did not leave any coordinates of her whereabouts.

I hope the Ministry is able to keep an eye on this one.
Given their track record since Campbell came into power, the simple fact that the Ministry should keep an eye on this one is enough to give me chills for the child.
We have to assume somebody will now take all of this seriously. That means more than making sure all of the aunts have cell phones and that sort of nonsense in the future.
Does any one believe this Crap From mother, renter, Aunt.
It's all Gordon Campbell's and Colin Kinsley's fault.
Please go back on your meds...
Someones brat goes missing and we blame Campbell. Why was his name brought up? Hmmmm? No one is responsible for anything anymore. Right? Just the govt. leaders of the day are at fault. Bah! Oh yeah, don't blame me fer this comment. My disdain of ninnies made me do it.
Do you deny that the Ministry of Children and Families have been so damaged by the budget cuts and constantly changing management that they have been implicated in the lack of investigation into their own malpractice? The disgracefull history of the "revamped" Ministry speaks for itself. I have no problem with pointing out how the Campbell government with it's faulty neoliberal ideology has caused the destruction of British Columbia's safety net because I firmly believe that what he has done has substantially hurt the people of British Columbia and thus he is fair game whenever a portion of his inflicted ideology has yet again endangered or damaged the ability of an agency to perform its duties. Perhaps Simple Simon, you support Campbells actions. That is naturally your right, but you must also expect critisim when proof exisist regarding the failures of his policies. It is true that this discusion is a seperate issue than the missing parent situation, but the two stories are related because the Damaged Ministry is involved.
Failures of Campbells policies, eh? The N.D.P. never had failed policies? Gimme a break. I know! Spend more money. My tax money! There is still some money left in my wallet after three levels of government get finished with it. How about some people get a handle on their own lives? Or get the day care lady to raise them better. Tax me. I'm Canadian. It seems the less responsible a person is, the more apt the government will look after them. Punishment fer being a taxpayer? I'm tired of it.
WOW! I'm glad I don't have your troubles.
Quite ironic that a simple little story about a lost little girl, who was successfully returned to her family would lead to such verbal diarhea about MCFD.. anyone think of where this little one would be today had it not been for MCFD providing her a place to stay until her family could be located. Perhaps she would ahve been better off left with the residents of 1st and Ospika, b/c we all know that is a good neighbourhood
Why is it so easy to walk through life pointing fingers at everyone else? How is it that the Government, our Premier, or our elected officials are at the brunt of the criticism in a situation such as this?

One needs to look a little deeper to see what the real underlying root problems are in this situation. Then direct some comments or solutions to avoid the situation happening in the first place.

This could have been a tragic mistake for the people involved. Maybe just a breakdown in communication.

Or, this could have been an extremely selfish, irresponsible and careless behavior by a parent. I would prefer to hear the whole story before I pronounced judgement or attached blame on anyone.

Thank you Blazin420 for recognizing the positive efforts our Ministry of Children & Family's made in the positive outcome of this situation. I would also like to thank the RCMP and the MCFD for their efforts and appreciate their quick resolve. Chester
