Safety Messages Issued for Long Weekend

It is normal for ICBC to issue a reminder about safety on the roads heading into a long weekend, but there is also a reminder about being extra careful on the rivers and lakes.

The B.C. Coroner's Service has issued a public safety bulletin not only reminding residents to be careful near waterways, but to warn visitors about the hazards posed by rivers and lakes.

In July, there were 12 drownings in the province, three of the accidents involved visitors from outside the province.

Assistant Deputy Chief Coroner Jeff Dolan says there are hazards which residents consider common knowledge like:

-cold temperatures of rivers and lakes

-swiftness of the current

-slipperiness of rocks along shoreline

-steep drop-offs in lakes and rivers which pose hazards to those who are not strong swimmers.

On the roadways, ICBC is reminding everyone to slowdown and drive safely.

Last year, there were more than 1,700 crashes on the BC Day long weekend resulting in 550 injuries and 2 deaths.  Solicitor General John Les says police will be out in full force and will be targeting speeders and aggressive drivers, "The most effective way to reduce crashes is through a combination of education and enforcement. Over the long weekend and throughout the summer, expect to see both."

The province has added 40 new highway webcams if you need to check out a highway before heading out.  That brings to 56 the number of web cams focused on major intersections or highways in the province.  You can find the real time photos by visiting www.drivebc.ca

I think I will take the law into my own hands and deal with this stuff..
I am going to stay home.....
I will do the same...even the most minor city streets are race tracks, speed limits don't seem to have any meaning to most drivers.

>On the roadways, ICBC is reminding everyone to slowdown and drive safely.<

Good advice if everyone would take it.

Out on the highway if one sticks very close to the posted speed limit of 90 or 100 (by going perhaps 5 clicks faster) one gets TAILGATED, passed on DOUBLE lines and harrassed in many other very imaginative ways...including the outstretched middle finger salute!

Police are conspicuous by being somewhere else...
perhaps stationed at intersections trying to catch someone going through an amber light.

Perhaps people should consider leaving a half an hour earlier when going on a trip rather than jeopardizing their own lives and those of others trying to shave off a few minutes of their travel time with Michael Schumacher like behaviour (while driving a minivan!) without having the skills of this world champion driver.

You should be allowed to make a citizens arrest of any bad driver.
Cuff them and push them into the ditch ( tough to climb out handcuffed) take the car keys out of the ignition and throw them in a lake or river to keep the bonehead from driving.
But the cops do not want this as they are very often the worst drivers on the road.
If they just ticketed themselves they should easily be able to surpass their monthly ticket quotas.
I was in front of, then passed by, and then followed an RCMP driving a suburban just yesterday.
Wow what a bad driver.
In 3 minutes of observation i saw him break at least 6 traffic laws.
He must have been in a hurry to meet his pals at Timmy's.
No lights or sirens, just a piss poor driver like most are.
The usual crap of do as i say, not as i do !
I think Turkey and South America has a good solution for those who drink and drive.
what you ask?

A 45 to the back of the head..... rehabilitation
Ok it might be a tad severe. But we need something better than what we have now. Somewhere in between what we have and what could be.
I think a loss of licence, for life, and a loss of the vehicle the driver was driving, even if it isn't his, would mybe make the people who loan their vehicles, less apt to do so.

Drive with out licence and those vehicles to be seized as well. And if caught the second time a severe jail time would be given.
Relax - you getting as bad as the drivers you hate. Wah Wah, that driver fingered me - get the cops! Smile and wave, it'll make you feel better and make the finger droop.

The cops have their problems too. The political correctness loaded them up with women, and what are they going to do with them? Put them on raod patrol where they are out of way, and a little bad driving is the trade off.
