A Chinese delegation from Guangdong Province will be in Prince George this coming week.
The dignitaries from the Guangdong Overseas Chinese Affairs Office and the People’s Government of Guangdong Province are interested in opportunities in B.C., as well as in learning about historical locations where immigrants from their province settled. They arrive on Saturday and will spend five days out of their 15-day Western Canada tour in Northern B.C. The group will be in Prince George next Tuesday and Wednesday and will explore the City’s past and present connections with Guangdong Province. They will visit several areas of the City and will meet with the Mayor and members of City Council. Before arriving in Prince George the delegation will spend several days in Barkerville, visiting with representatives of the Barkerville |Heritage Trust. “We are excited to celebrate the significant contributions of the Chinese community to the history and development of Barkerville,” says Murry Krause, Chair of the Barkerville |Heritage Trust. At one time during the 1880’s, about half of the residents of the Cariboo Goldfields were from Guangdong Province. As well, about half the structures in Barkerville have a Chinese connection, including the Chinese Freemason’s meeting hall, which is believed to be one of the oldest structures in British Columbia.

The day came and this old fellow was very excited about his first plane ride, but the weather had turned bitter cold. The police couldn't find him around town but people had seen him walking toward the airport. The police drove out to the airport and found him standing there waiting for the airplane that wasn't coming. The airport is at least a mile outside town and he had walked out there in 40 below.
