A Chinese delegation from Guangdong Province will be in Prince George this coming week.

The dignitaries from the Guangdong Overseas Chinese Affairs Office and the People’s Government of Guangdong Province are interested in opportunities in B.C., as well as in learning about historical locations where immigrants from their province settled. They arrive on Saturday and will spend five days out of their 15-day Western Canada tour in Northern B.C.

The group will be in Prince George next Tuesday and Wednesday and will explore the City’s past and present connections with Guangdong Province. They will visit several areas of the City and will meet with the Mayor and members of City Council.

Before arriving in Prince George the delegation will spend several days in Barkerville, visiting with representatives of the Barkerville |Heritage Trust.

“We are excited to celebrate the significant contributions of the Chinese community to the history and development of Barkerville,” says Murry Krause, Chair of the Barkerville |Heritage Trust.

At one time during the 1880’s, about half of the residents of the Cariboo Goldfields were from Guangdong Province. As well, about half the structures in Barkerville have a Chinese connection, including the Chinese Freemason’s meeting hall, which is believed to be one of the oldest structures in British Columbia.

I lived in Wells when I was very young and I only remember one Chinese fellow from that time. He was old and always seemed to be hanging around the sidewalks in front of the Post Office or the Cinema. He didn't like kids. I know kids would tease him.
Everyone called him 40 Below. The story is that he was arrested for being drunk or something, and the police told him he would have to go before the judge in Quesnel. The police had a plane and told him he would be riding it down to Quesnel.
The day came and this old fellow was very excited about his first plane ride, but the weather had turned bitter cold. The police couldn't find him around town but people had seen him walking toward the airport. The police drove out to the airport and found him standing there waiting for the airplane that wasn't coming. The airport is at least a mile outside town and he had walked out there in 40 below. He was later taken to Quesnel by car, about a 3 hour bumpy ride.
great story, and so on topic. I knew a chinese guy when i was a kid.................bla bla bla, i thoughtI was the only person on here just posting for no point whatsoever. Oh well i guess there are others as bored as myself.
I went to school with a Chinese kid. His name was Sherman. His parents owned a fish and chip shop. I went in there when I was 12 years old. I wanted to buy a piece of pie. So I asked his mom what kind of pie they had. She replied, and I quote, " Appo, laisin and bluebelly." Being a pre-politically correct kid, in 1957 I said nothing. Oh yes. I ordered apple pie. It was good. Somehow these things stick with ya fer a lifetime.
One other item. Sherman and I both graduated in 1965. My parents bought me a jacket and two pairs of pants fer $40 dollars, Sherman got a 1965 Pontiac Parisienne convertable for his grad. White with red interior. I keep telling myself I am over it. I think I am.
frikkin sherman, he is probably a doctor or some crap and has boatloads of money(no pun intended. or maybe he runs like 20 grow ops down in the city(vancouver for the laymans out there)i keep trying to rememberif i knew any chinese kids like simon and yammie did but i can only remember kicking the crap out of a couple chinese kids. usually when one is a bully who beats kids up you don't first ask for their name. oh well i guess i don't have such a story filled with anecdotes and all that fancy shit. my life sucks, oh and simon and yammie, yours must too.
I was travelling with my parents and went into a Chinese run cafe.
Sign said "pie alamode" 15 cents. "Alone" pie 10 cents.
I had never heard of "alone" pie, so I sure wanted to try it.
I was very insistent-until it was finally drummed into me that meant pie by itself with no ice cream.
Gotta' admit-some things one just does not forget!
"usually when one is a bully who beats kids up you don't first ask for their name"

So that is how you got your name, Spanky.

;-)
