Prince George RCMP say an assault that occurred at 3rd and George on Friday evening was the result of a bystander coming to the aid of someone involved in a domestic dispute.

It appears, at this time, that the injured bystander and the male involved in the incident did not know each other.

No arrests have been made, and the 56-yer-old man is still in critical condition in Vancouver Hospital.

3rd and George, you say!
Fantastic downtown area of the city of Prince George. Certainly not the first incident in that section of the city.
Are the police patrolling that area, or is it quota time again for ticketing?
Appears it is not safe in this city-be it in a park, at a service station, or downtown.
With all the drugs floating around in this city-soon we shall have more murders-and isn't it about time for home invasions.
For a city of around 70,000, it sure is hitting for the big time with crime.
Amazing how ill at ease one feels just driving through the "hood" in the middle of the day.
Swaying and weaving people who shake their fists at a passing vehicle is a bit un nerving, but I have yet to see a police car in the area. I NEVER go after dark, just too cautious.
It will never be cleaned up in my lifetime, nor will the downtown become safe. They fist fight around the Ramada and along George in broad daylight.
I recall the years when no one gave a second thought before going downtown.
Now the streets look pretty empty!
How did it come to pass?
Things haven't actually changed much over the last 30 years or so at least. When I first went to PG in 1976 the downtown area was already considered a dodgy place to be on Friday after work hours and Saturday evenings, especially at Third and George where the Mac Hotel used to be, reputedly a hotbed of prostitution and drug sales. Further along at First and George wasn't that pleasant either, and let's not mention the Biker Bar on Third Avenue.

I lived in the VLA for a few months in those days before moving to College Heights, and it was better than it is now, but remember there was a concerted effort some years ago to remove those society considers "undesirables" from the downtown and they went there.

This kind of violence has happened occasionally over the years (the episode with the transvestite prostitute outside the 5th Ave Pub for instance). It is not something new and unexpected. When you have the number of pubs close together, as there is in the Downtown, then violence will happen from time to time.

One of my sons went on a ride with the RCMP on a Friday evening in the mid 1980s because he was considering becoming a police officer at the time. The police are there, but are very busy stopping violence much of the time. Sometimes it breaks through.

This episode is not new, nor representative of a worsening of violence in society. The person who went to assist was obviously a courageous man, and I wish him a full recovery.

I know that there are some foot patrols that happen downtown, mainly by the auxiliary police force. I see them out fairly regulary in the summer downtown, but I dont think those guys are allowed to be out by themselves in the evening time, which doesnt help.
I think there is just a shortage of bodies with the RCMP. They always seem to be chasing all over trying to deal with all the calls and files, and have little time left over.
I heard a rumour that a few of those George st businesses may be becoming more proactive in the near future to try and help the problems.
Also, I heard that a Tony Romas restaurant is opening up in the old FoodTeller building. Maybe that can be a minor help toward picking up the area.
boy the officer who gave me my $138 seat belt fine should leave his hiding spot on first ave and go solve some real crimes.
i hear ya fed up!
are there any good guys hangin on 3rd and george?
trusted, I think the police are going to calls involving the same idiots time and time again which is probably why you don't see as many downtown. Then again if you drive downtown for ten minutes and don't see a cop do you all of a sudden assume that they are out writing tickets? Is it the fault of the cops that the downtown is rife with pubs, pawn shops, needle exchanges, halfway houses, group homes etc? Look at the big picture.
Yep, I looked at it, and I realize there is no cure. Not in the immediate future anyhow.
I just avoid downtown, so do not go often.
I don't have a solution-and I sure know where you are coming from troll!
yah...its too bad that so many sketchy operations are in that downtown core. its too bad that their is no apparent solution....but I would love to hear some ideas if anyone can think of anything.
The downtown trash like to hassle people, but the one thing the trash really hate is being hassled and shoved around. Send the cops in to hassle the scum, it'll work. The scum will float away.
By the way, did you ever notice that the scum rises to the top? ;-)
I think they should make an effort to get the homeless children off the downtown streets by moving their support services to friendlier environments.

Downtown PG's next generation.
hey everyone, downtown is not the only place that has a lot of uneducated people with nowhere to go. People like that are everywhere. Mannerless, homeless, jobless, whatever. Downtown also has, obviously, good people there too.
The point of this story was a good guy got busted up for trying to help a (lady) in distress...I understand he is hurt quite seriously. What I want to know is...what happened to the rude man who was beating up on a woman!!! and then turned his anger to a stranger??? Where is he???? Is he by chance free to hang out downtown and do it again to someone else??? My guess is YES. But I hope I am wrong. I hope the police are just holding him and waiting for the outcome of the injured man before pressing the appropriate charges.
The woman too, did she turn on the man who was trying to help her because she was suddenly afraid he might hurt her honey man?? Unfortunately, in this day and age, when a woman stays with a man who publicly beats her, she is right where she wants to be.
I remember when a fight would be one on one and you never kicked a man that was down, nowadays nobody picks a fight with anyone unless they have lots of backup. Gangs of kids and young people looking for a loner. Plenty of cowards out there, that's for sure. How about you? Did you raise your kids like that??
