A 39 year old Prince George man is in critical but stable condition following a failed  break and enter.

Just before 6 this morning,  the power in the region of the Pickering substation at the foot of Pickering Road below the jail was cut  because of a  break and enter.

Constable Gary Godwin says a vehicle was driven through two  fences in an effort to steal copper wire and pipe.  Instead of getting the goods, the would be thief  was zapped  by 12,000 volts.

The suspect was rushed to Prince George Regional Hospital where he is listed as critical.  It is possible he may be transferred to the lower mainland.

I can hardly wait for the comments from the Don's of this world on this one. This article has teh potential to set a new record for the number of responses.

;-)
Such excessive force, I suspect that 10,000 volts would have been sufficient.
This would be headlines on the show
"What Were you Thinking".....
Must live an electrifying life......groan....
A candidate for the Darwin award, maybe.
I say give him the transfer to the Lower Main Land. He could use a change of venue! Hee hee!!
I think this story is re-volting and shocking. A cash and grab story turned into 'The Green Mile'.

Where do you get the energy from?
This story is reminiscent of a Keystone Kops Kaper, but in reality it is a very serious matter in more ways than one.

Aside from the pain and suffering that the B&E artist has brought upon himself there is the cost/damage that he is inflicting on our Health Care System which is now incurring huge expenses trying to look after his injuries.

Additionally, stunts like this one are forcing B.C. Hydro to replace "valuable metal" components in their substations with ones which are made of ordinary metals, such as galvanized steel and aluminum.

This costs a great deal of money (province wide) and we as Hydro customers will have to pay for it when the bi-monthly bill arrives in the mail.

It really is such an anti-social crime that the perpetrators should not only receive a considerable jail sentence but should be forced to make restitution for ALL the damages, including the stay and care at the hospital.

Who buys the stolen "goods"? Pawn shops?
Nobody should be able to sell scrap metal without proving where they got it from. Nice thought, but the underground economy doesn't play by the rules.

It's a sad day when people will resort to risking their lives for a few bucks worth of wire. Chester
