A mature male rufous hummingbird (upper right) flares his tail  and flashes his throat  colour to  frighten the others ( this year's brood) away from the feeder.

The mature males will leave the Prince George area over the next couple of weeks, the females and youngsters will follow by the middle of August.

The birds  are pretty much gone from the region by the first week of September, and no, they do NOT catch a ride in the wings of geese!

I am amazed at how quickly the feeders empty, and how I will be notified by a wee hummingbird hovering in a window looking at me. I immediately check, and sure enough-time for refills. Somehow these gorgeous little birds can bring a definite feeling of happiness. I remember years ago when I was convinced a giant bumblebee was after me every time I went outside. I would run for cover!!!! Finally the lady that ran the cafe asked me why I was always on the run when I came in. She laughed about the bumblebee, and informed me it was probably a hummingbird. Yep. it was!!!!
I boil lots of sugar and water every summer. Do it up ahead, so I am always ready to fill a feeder. God is good, allowing us the joy of having these darling birds at our homes. I am so glad to see them every year. They are welcomed!!!
hey gypsy, do you respond to absolutley every story?

just curious.
hey Spanky ...

gypsy is just one of those who has a diverse range of interests ....

besides, we have to keep this blog going for Ben ...

it would be nice to get a few more people willing to take "pen in hand" so to speak.

wonder how many are actually viewing and not commenting. If it is like most sites, I am assuming the ratio might be anywhere between 50 to 1 and 100 to 1.

I used to feed hummingbirds as well, but decided to give it up because when we were gone for a few days the poor things would wonder how come there was nothing coming out of those wonderful coloured plastic flowers ;-)

They were fun to look at in front of the kitchen window though .....
I'll not be havin' any snide remarks from you Spanky. Now get with the program and tell your friends about this site, like I do. No, they are not aware that I make any comments.
I have already been around the block, maybe a coupla' times??? Take note, I have not been asleep at the switch most of the time. Like to keep up with current events, even remember a bit of the past. I will try not to bore you!!!!!I also would like more readers to take an active interest and comment as to their opinions. Bet you would too!!!!! Always nice to get others viewpoints.
Hey Gypsy - yer doin fine, I just gotta figure out how to comment on issues that are not in here!! eg hockey mom wants daughter to have right to change in same locker room with boys....please, somebody stop her!!!!
PS - I feed the hummingbirds too, and I love it when they come to the window and say "thanks" or "fillerup". I once had the whole band follow me into the kitchen and hover while I filled it! I do believe they are very smart birds!
Was just asking. Wasn't meant to be mean.
Hi! "Speaking out."
If you have an issue go to Letters to the Editor and you can write a letter and perhaps obtain other peoples opinions on the subject. Gives all an opportunity to have a voice. Cheers!!!
