Bears are on the move  in the Prince George area.

Last night, RCMP  got a call about a  black bear spotted eating garbage on the back deck of a residence in the 4800 block of Crest Road in te Cranbrook Hill area.  The animal took off shortly after being reported.

On the Hart,  a grizzly bear that has been  in the  region for about a week now, was spotted on Diamond Drive around 10:30 last night.  The owner of the residence says his dog alerted him to the bear's presence.  The Conservation Officers have been advised.

Earlier this week, a black bear was spotted near Vance Road.

Police are advising home owners to remove all fruit from fruit trees, and make sure there is no garbage  around as bears are looking for some quick fast meals before moving on to their dens for the winter.

Remember, if you have a bear problem now, the province has slashed the budget of the the conservation authority and there has been a large reduction in the wardens available to help you. So if you phone the conservation officer to get help, you will need to hand over the phone to the bear as the officer will be unavailable to help you.The remaining officers have been trained in negotiation tactics to convince the bear to move on. All part of Gordon Campbells new design for animal managment.
I had bear problems twice - before the province slashed the budget of the conservation authority. This was about 8 or nine years ago. In both cases I ended up speaking to someone in Vancouver and no conservation officer showed up.
In one instance the person taking the call thought that I was calling from Port Moody.

The police vehicle came and the RCMP constable was afraid to get out of the car while the bear was climbing all over the fences, our sundeck and then it attempted to knock over our garbage can which was securely chained to a wall. It was the snorting and pawing that woke us up in the first place.

The constable left when the bear finally decided to move on to another house.

I don't think that Glen Clark or Ujjal Dosangh had anything to do with it.
