The College of New Caledonia's Student Association is preparing a special event to honour and show solidarity with students and staff at Dawson College in Montreal.
Dawson College was the target for tragedy September 13th. That's when a lone gunman opened fire in the school killing one female student wounding more than a dozen more before he was shot once by police, then turned the gun on himself and took his own life.
"We have spent a lot of time with their student union, we've had beers with them, hung out with them, so we need to move towards some closure" Those are the words of Rob Mealey a Resource Co-Ordinator with the College of New Caledonia's Student Association. "Students here are coping well, " says Mealey, who adds "Of course it has raised questions about security, but mostly we are just feeling very sad for our friends at Dawson."
"We want to show that, regardless of the distance between our two institutions, CNC students stand in solidarity with our sisters and brothers attending Dawson College, " said CNC Students’ Association Chairperson Valentine Crawford.
Next Wednesday representatives of the CNC Students’ Association and other organizations will give brief statements in the Atrium on the Prince George Campus starting at 9:40 a.m. The Students’ Association has also called for a minute of silence across the campus, which will take place at 9:45 a.m.
Members of the community are welcome to attend the event. The public is also welcome to sign a special letter of condolence that will be available Monday, September 18th. Anyone wanting to add their name to that letter can sign the card at the CNC Student Association office as of Monday. The letter will then be sent to Dawson College.
