New Ramp Open to Traffic

Over a year to build, but the ramp linking Winnipeg Street and 15th Avenue in Prince George is now open.

Last year, the underground storm sewer and earthworks were completed. This year, the balance of the project, including curb/gutter, sidewalk, paving, and lighting were undertaken. The landscaping should be finished in the next four weeks.

Now that its open, there are some minor restrictions for traffic:

  • you can't  turn left on to 15th from the ramp
  • you can't turn turn left on to the ramp from Winnipeg

The ramp linking 15th Avenue and Winnipeg has been designed to reduce traffic flows through the residential neighbourhood (Spruce Street to 20th)  to reduce the number of vehicles using the Parkwood Shopping complex to gain access to either Winnipeg Street or 15th  Avenue, and to improve road networks for pedestrians and cyclists.

Am I wrong in assuming that if you can't turn left off the "ramp" onto 15th to head towards Central, that it's only a half assed improvement? Was this design approved by the same study group that are working on the Cameron Street bridge?
Pretty much typical of the reasoning that runs the city.....
They should have "studied" it a little longer...
It's a quarter of a clover leaf. What do you expect? They should have purchased property at the time when the overpass was created to allow a proper intersection to be developed. The question is, do the traffic movements warrent it? I doubt it. If your destination from Massey is the residential area to the west of Winnipeg, then make a turn at Carney. If it is downtown, go Winnipeg as before and hang a right at any of the numbered Avenues. If you are going east of Victoria, hang a right at the new ramp.

This is the Vancouver approach. Why give them a 16 lane highway to get to downtown when they can take granville, oak, etc.?? This is PG. We do not need a clovereaf or another stop light on 15th, just to make a left turn to the west. There are plenty of alternate routes which are not exactly congested.

I would have put a Starbucks in that location.

;-)
Now that that quasi-cloverleaf (Prince George style) is finished maybe they can smooth out that potholed and cracked Abhu St. from 15th to 5th Ave. After that, how about continuing that non-existent road on the top of Ospika? Never ends, does it?
I saw whatt they were doing and simply shook my head.
Another useless waste of space and tax dollars.

As to some overpass thingy they hope to make by the dodge dealership.
Its not needed either...although a very simple tunnel just big enough to walk through under the roadway would be great for all the kids that cross there.
Actually a child ( way too young to be out on his own) was waiting to cross there about a month ago....I stopped to let him cross.
The traffic coming into town saw me and stopped to as well as the people in the lane beside me, the guy behind me laid on his horn like a mad man.
At the light we all had to stop as it was red at the top of th small hill...the guy beside me rioolled down his passenger window, and said " that was so nice of you to stop for that young lad, and do not worry about the angry person behind you, society for some reason has that type of person as well, and just ignore them"
I was truly touched....if you read this sir, Thanks for taking the time to offer a kind word.

Cheers

Marty
I think it is a nice addition to the PG infrastructure. The City can only do so much with the roads in one year and I think they have done an amazing job this year. Ahbau Street would be a tough route to re-pave, as it is part of a major bus route and that area has heavy traffic. When the city starts that project I am sure someone will have something else to complain about. That's what some of us are good at, complaining and whining.

Someone fixes a road or makes an improvement, people whine about other roads.

Someone offers to redevelop and invest in downtown, people whine.

Are you whining about whiners Roundup? Guess waht, you just joined the group of whiners. Welcome aboard. Feel free to whine about anything you want, even whiners.

;-)

PS ... being a tough road to re-pave is no excuse. Foothills was repaved. It carries a lot of traffic and is on a bus route. In some cities they pave at night when there is little if any traffic. The local residents may have to accept a few nights of noise.
Foothills is also 2 lanes on both sides of the boulevard, which allows traffic to flow while re-paving is underway. Yes they can set-up detours through the area while they work on those streets, so there are no real excuses, just added costs to overcome.

If the City were to repave all the "problem" roads in one year, would we complain about tax increases to make this dream come true?

Rounder: "If the City were to repave all the "problem" roads in one year, would we complain about tax increases to make this dream come true?"

No, I wouldn't. I'd pay another 200 to 300 bucks a year extra on my property tax - exclusively collected to bring the much neglected roads and streets up to proper driving conditions!

The roads were allowed to deteriorate without proper maintenance in the hope of snaring some huge "promised" federal lump sum infrastructure transfer dollars from Ottawa - of course, since they did not happen we are in a desperate catch-up mode.

There would have to be total transparency and open books that show that the extra levy was indeed used for the purpose collected - and not some outdoor speed skating rink or a display board at the CN Centre or some other ridiculous ego trip.
I don't think we are all "whiners". Some of us are just making observations on certain issues. I don't whine. Squeaky wheel gets the oil? Hmmmm?
I used it yesterday...what a waste of money...OMG
