New Home For Needle Exchange: One Man's Opinion

The City has an opportunity to now pay more than lip service to the downtown, by choosing a location that takes the needle exchange out of the eyes of some of the city's better restaurants and hotels.

There are locations that are less visible.

Did the city purposely legislate the needle exchange to the area?  Think about it, the hooker trade and the junkies were encouraged to move into an area where, at one time, retail shops flourished.

Instead of trying to spread the street people around the area, a solid effort was made to put all of the problems into a few short street.  The effort was either deliberate or without thought.  I for one don't buy into the idea they didn’t know what their actions would do to the business in the area.

While it has not been officially reported, the fire that destroyed the businesses along George Street was deliberately set. So what do we have now?  The General Manager of one of  the leading hotels pleading with the city and the health authority to at least move the needle exchange away from his door to another location.

Our planning of the city was supposed to be far more forward thinking than communities such as Nanaimo or Kelowna where retail simply moved out of the core away from the problems of the street into a new area which quickly became, essentially, the downtown core.

We looked at bad planning in both Nanaimo and Kelowna and then, in its infinite wisdom, the city took exactly the same approach and so we have a new downtown and we have abandoned the old core to the folks of the street.

To make matters worse, they have been effectively placed in a specific area either by encouragement or by pressure.

We have businesses which established, spent good money trying to make an effort to survive, only to be thwarted by the decisions of a city which doesn't even feel the need to pay them lip service.

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion

If we really need this,
and I don't think we do as we are just enabling them.
Lets put it out on Goat Island....
It doesn't matter where they put these services there are going to be complaints of "not in my backyard". Good luck in finding a spot where it would be welcome.
Gofaster, the major benefit to a needle exchange is the protection of society from the spread of diseases. Indigent people who would otherwise share needles will still need treatment if sick from hepatitis, AIDS etc, and will come in contact with non-indigent people and likely pass on the diseases. Not all needle users are indigent by any means, after all, and many hookers are with customers who are not. it is in society's self interest, both social and financial to provide an exchange somewhere.
Perhaps we should put it in the new casino. that way we can encourage one stop shopping.
It has been my experience that it is best not to acknowledge ignorant postings as it only encourages them to continue their stupid comments. Instead of trying to educate the uneducatable I perfer to ignore them and stick to those who are capable of intelligent thought. However that is just my opinion.
Location? How about the detox centre?
Well Detox center is about the best idea I have seen so far..
That is "IF" we really need this...and it appears some people think so and some of us don't..
But that seems the best so far....close to hospital help in the event of overdoes as well.
Where does the word ëxchange" enter into the phrase "needle exchange?" It seems people and kids pick up used needles everywhere. Needle exchange also dole out crack pipes? Don't break the law, but if you do, use these. Sheesh! What logic, eh? Make the junkies exchange used needles for new ones. Please don't litter. Give a hoot. Don't pollute. So they say.
The exhange is a dirty needle is turned in and they get a nice clean new one.....
No no pipes and
no it is not against the law...
just enabling in my opinion.
Whatever happened to making healthy choices...
and no matter what you do drugs in my opinion are not a healthy choice.
Oh I think I have opend a hornets nest...
yes, you too are entitles to your opinion.
