P.G. Idle Free

Nice to see the Government of Canada helped sponsor the sign announcing Prince George's Civic Square is an "idle free zone".

Although you may wish it meant everyone  in the "zone" was "busy" or employed, it simply means you can't sit at the curbside with the motor running.
Although with a posted speed limit of 20 km,  you may as well be "idling".

Anyone have any idea of the cost of having signs produced, and then we are subjected to looking at this waste of tax payers dollars?? What we lack in brains must be made up for in dollars!!!! What brilliant politician came up with this dire need , and at what cost? Had to be through a grant. Just too stupid to even bring forth many comments.
I like the idea of signs, but don't like the idea of enforced harrasement.

Awareness is a beautiful thing. I only wish they would spend some money on littering signs that scare the crap out of people that litter in places like Salmon Valley, or in the cities trail systems. I've made requests in the past, but got nowhere with the local politicians.

I even made a few fake signs of my own in the past that seamed to do the trick and did no harm to anyone else.

IMO the first step in any campaign is creating awareness of the issue. I applaude those that take this step rather then going directly to enforcement measures.

Now lets get some littering signs and maybe some garbage bins located around this city so everyone can do thier part.
What a joke.
I think some gov employee has alot of free time on his or her hands, can you imagine we actually paid money for these signs....what a bunch of morons.
ROCK...trying to keep it real 24/7
Here is the link to the federal program

Do the calculation and see how many gymnasiums full of CO2 you fill every year if you normally idle 1 minute, 3 minutes .. etc....

I wonder if anyone has ever heard of sign clutter???

Is there a fine when the RCMP catches you??? of course not!!! ....

Could there be ... ???

Sure!!!! ...

Perhaps the city could hire staff to go around with timers and ding the culprits with a $20/minute fine......

Has anyone ever heard of sign clutter??????

There ought to be a fine for that!!!

I can just see it now. Citizen vigilantes issueing tickets to City Hall for causing sign clutter in our community!!

Now there would be a reason vor Global to bring their cameras to that weird duck place in the centre of the province.

;-)
Well, aren't we ready to waste some time now??We are idling!!!!
Upon reading some stats I see if one allows their vehicle to idle more than 10 seconds we are major polluters. Guess we all shut down at "signal lights." When I stop at a mail box to get out and mail a letter, I am to shut the engine off, as I could be longer than the allotted 10 seconds. I stop behind a school bus-they better shut their engine off and I will shut mine off, as kids can take longer than 10 seconds to unload and move out of the way. I stop to allow pedestrians to cross in a "stop walk" and turn the key off, as they may be slow moving. I waste far more gas restarting my car than idling . Logging truck operators never shut their rigs off in the winter months. Diesel can gel in extreme cold, (which we happen to experience here), and the motor will not restart. I really have not been involved in any discussion that could actually be as "stupid" as this one. I kind of feel foolish even responding. Kind of a contest--who's dumb, and who's dumber????
I wonder if this could be the briiliant work of BRIAN SKAKUN? Sounds like it to me. Anyhow, sounds foolish nonetheless.

Hey I know, Listen to the SPANKSHOW, and learn something new today kiddies!
To respond to the 10 second comment read this site from Washington State.

Notice the break even time for idling versus restarting is thought to be 1 minute by the EPA ... 20 seconds by Ford Europe ..

does frequnet restarting place wear and tear on the starter/ignition?? ... no as long as not excessive (so what is excessive??)

Now for the trucking industry ..... several bed time reading sites.... :-)

then there are these laws with respect to idling in the USA ....

http://www.epa.gov/otaq/smartway/documents/statelaws.pdf

look at Washington DC and New York City ... 3 minutes ..

http://www.oag.state.ny.us/environment/idling_trucks_buses.pdf

and the reaction of the truckers ....

http://www.bigrigowner.com/articles/0804pd.html

and the slow proliferation of the law into "suburban New York" ...

http://www.newrochelleny.com/new.asp?id=347

can a bylaw such as that be far behind in PG?

Inquiring minds want to know if the sign posted by the city is a "sign" of things to come..
Owl,

I think it is fair to say that as far as anyone in this city is going to go is the curiosity sign. Anything beyond that is to invite mini hitler into your neighborhood.
