Claim staking in the Nechako River Basin and Anahim Lake area has hit an all time high.

From July 7th to September 25th, 193,670 hectares in 439 claims were staked.

The heavy activity came following a release by Geoscience BC of surveys they took of the respective areas which showed significant concentrations of gold and copper.

Geoscience was established as an independent body with government funding to try and mitigate the effects of the mountain pine beetle on forest dependent communities in the region.

By using new technology, Geoscience was able to look beyond the lava layers covering much of the ground.  That information, combined with water samples and other research, Geoscience was able to identify prospective mineral deposits.

Geoscience airborne geophysical survey in south central BC was announced in September of this year. It will cover about 8900 square kilometers in an area south of Canin Lake to provide mineral potential in that area. That report will not be ready until 2007.

To date no new mines permits have been issued, a few exploration permits have been issued, but more are expected when the results of the airborne survey are released.
