Organizers for the Stand up for The North Conference that is set to take place in Prince George on the 4th and 5th of November, say  support for the two day event is growing.

"The response has been phenomenal," says spokesperson Peter Ewart,  "So far we have been able to raise over $17,000 in donations from town and village councils, labour organizations, educational institutions and community groups in the region."

According to John Grogan, Robson Valley organizer for the Committee, the reason why the conference is getting such good support is that "the people of villages, rural areas, and larger centres in this region want to have a broad grass roots discussion about what can be done to renew the region in the wake of the pine beetle.

Bob LaVallee, Mackenzie organizer for the group, comments that "small towns and big towns in the North have contributed a lot of revenue to the province over the years. In this coming period, where we will be facing many challenges as a result of the pine beetle, we have to make sure we get back what we deserve – our fair share. The conference is going to be a good place to develop made-in-the-north solutions that benefit all the communities in the region."

The conference will feature speakers from CNC and UNBC, labour, business, First Nations, community and environmental organizations, as well as civic and provincial leaders. People from all the communities of the Central Interior and North are invited to attend.

I am getting "beatled to death"!!!
Sounds great. Any entertainment? I love a party.

Oh, that notion about "we have to make sure we get back what we deserve – our fair share" ... kinda too late now. That should have been done as the money moved out of the region over the decades. Take even a 10% cut and then re-invest it locally in more diversified businesses. To not do so means that this region has not been developing itself as a sustainable region. Lots of egg on many people's faces who are in responsible positions that can put something like that into action. Then again, it is never too late.

"Gee, how could we have forseen a beetle epidemic?" Something about saving for a rainy day I think I seem to remember rom the mouths of my parents. So the rain is beetles at the moment. Soon it may also mean a change in paper technology which will one day render the mills archaic enough to not make economical to update the technology.

Oops..... you mean the beetle is not the only thing facing this region with respect to our dependence on wood?

Anyway, a fun time will be had by all. Anyone here game to follow what the promises are at the end of the session as to actions which can be monitored by the general puplic? I think that needs to be done!!
