While the Select Standing Committee on Finance holds a session at the Coast Inn of the North on Provincial budget issues late this afternoon, the B.C. Electoral Boundaries Commission will be at the Ramada Hotel from 6:30 to 9:30 to get your thoughts on boundaries for electoral ridings.
There has been speculation the Commission may be looking at adding 6 new ridings in the lower mainland where population growth has been substantial, and leaving the north as it is, with 8 ridings.
The consultation process will carry into Late November, with the proposed boundary changes drawn up by the end of this year. The preliminary report would be ready by mid August, followed by public hearings at this time next year, changes made by Christmas 2007 and the final report due in mid February of 2008.
The challenge is how to ensure adequate representation in the largest part of the province which has diverse geography and the smallest percentage of population.
Williams Lake willbe the next stop on the 26 community tour. That session is set for Thursday at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex.

I think it is time for a BC Triple E senate to represent regional interest where the tax dollars are coming from, or at minimum a whole new class of MLA's that are equal to each region and together have a regional veto ability on any legislation that deals with regional issues or issues that impact regions.
Short of that I would say it is almost time for Northern BC to go it independent as its own province funding its own infrastructure needs bringing democracy back to rural Northern BC.
We have the tax base, the population base, and we have the right to a democracy that means something, so I would say that is our future especially when Vancouver grows to 5 million people over the next ten years and Northern BC is under 400,000. We will be represented no more than a couple of small Vancouver neighborhoods and the majority will have never visited this part of the province much less have empathy for our issues.
