Another wind energy project has been given a provincial environmental certification.

Dokie Wind Energy Inc out of Victoria has  been  granted the certification for a second  project in the Chetwynd area.

This one  would  see 47 turbines installed on Mount Wartenbe, about 10 km southeast of Chetwynd.   It would create about 70.5 MW of power, enough to service some 20 thousand  homes.

The project (if it goes ahead) would create about 80 construction jobs, and  8-10 long term jobs once it actually started operation.  The main objection comes from Lone Prairie cattle ranchers, who use the proposed area for  grazing.

The certification outlines  nearly adozen committments that have to be met, including ongoing consultation with the neighbouring communities including the cattle ranchers.  There are also calls for  two years of monitoring  for impact to birds and bats,  the appointment of an environmental co-ordinator, detailed  soil preparation plan to prevent possible soil erosion during construction.

Dokie already has already received an environmental certification for a seperate project about 40km southwest of Chetwynd  That  project is west of Moberly Lake and would create 300MW of power.

That's why it called ChetWind!

We could have our own wind powered generator right here, all we have to do is mention the NDP record and Ammo starts huffing and puffing right away. Then we have to figuire out how to turn him off before the wind mill gets blown over!
Perhaps the editors should look at having an award for the "funniest post of the year"? The one above may just walk away with the whole enchilada!

Chet"wind"...eh?

I have an uncle in Southern Alberta that has a huge windfarm on is ranch. As of a few years ago he sold 90% of all windmills in Canada. I don't think he has anything to do with this one though. Good to see others picking up on it.

I think the ones he sells are 1.8 MW and these seem to be 1.5 MW. His are 1.8MW with a guaranteed availability of 95% from the manufacture in Denmark. This mean if it produces less than the 95% guarantee the manufacture will pay you the lost difference so that you can go to you bank and say yes this capital expenditure is guaranteed to pay for itself in 3.5 years or 5 years or what ever the price of electricity is at the time of purchase. At a couple of million a pop its a gold mine for anyone that has the land and the money to get off the ground.

I don't understand why we don't see more of these projects on the mountain ridges around here. I guess it comes down to access to the grid?
It comes down to not having enough politicians to run them. If we had the number of politicians that they have in Ont or Que, it would be a worthwhile project. Mike Harcourt is coming to town, but that's only a temporary fix.
We need at least twice the number we have now, and even that needs to be supplemented occasionally by the RCMP explaining away dead civilians or rambo cops. If we could convince Ammo that the NDP have been outlawed, and convince Don M that there's no cops in heaven, we might just have the juice to run 'er.
;-)
You know we could have a double system. Put me on one side and Diplomat on the other, he can talk about the NDP and I can accuse him of being Liberal. Result: endless energy!
Yes, I talk about facts and you can keep making any accusations you wish to make - Result: endless WASTE of energy.

Huge power lines from Peace River Dam runs through or close to Cheywyn on it way South. Why does Chetwyn need more power when it has access to one of the largest Power Projects in the World.

Answer. Because the power generated will tap into the grid and go to our friends in the South, the good old USA. The money will go to the Provincial Government, who will spend it foolishly as usual. Maybe to pay the debt from 2010. What a Sham.
We are currently buying power from the USA, it's been that way for awhile. Just so you know.

That's probably why they want to generate more power. They're probably selling it to us for twice what we were selling it to them for.
