Walk for Ian Bush
By 250 News
On the 29th, there will be a special walk in the memory of Ian Bush, the 22 year old who was shot to death by police in Houston one year ago.
Friends of the family have organized a special walk to mark the anniversary of the night Ian went to a hockey game, then died in police custody.
At 11 a.m. on the 29th, walkers will gather 12 kilometers east of Houston on Highway 16. Organizer Anne Wilson says it will take 4- 5 hours to complete the walk to the Ian Bush Memorial site on Highway 16 "We chose 12 kilometers because its been 12 months since Ian died, 12 months since so many people in Houston lost faith in the RCMP."
There will also be a walk in Smithers. Set for the same day, that walk will start at the Walmart parking lot in Smithers and will see walkers go to the KFC in Smithers and back. That walk is set to start at 5 p.m. on the 29th.
The police investigation cleared the officer involved of any wrong doing. The Bush family has launched a lawsuit against the officer and the Attorney General's office, the Coroner is expected to conduct an inquest in late Spring of 2007 and the Public Complaints Commission has started its own probe.
Donations are being accepted for the memorial walk says Anne Wilson "The money raised will be used to lobby the federal government to set up a totally independent investigation unit that can investigate incidents involving police".
Donations can be made by cheque to the
Ian Bush Memorial Fund Box 221, Houston B.C. V0J 1Z0
Donations can also be made at the Royal Bank, transit # 02240, "Ian Bush Memorial Fund".
