The man who was shot in the face with an arrow when he stopped to help a motorist along Highway 97 North a few years back, is outraged.
Paul Serup, says he is outraged by the fact that the man who did the shooting has been released from custody and given an absolute discharge.
Wade Gielzecki, 37 was found not guilty due to a mental disorder after he had been charged with attempted murder in the bow and arrow shooting.
Serup had stopped along Highway 97 in the Pine Pass after seeing vehicle skid marks heading off into the the ditch. As he approached the scene, a man brandishing a compound bow, stepped out of the bush and fired an arrow which struck Serup in the chin then passed through his neck.
Serup was able to get himself into his vehicle and drive to seek help, while the assailant disappeared into the bush. Gielzecki was later captured by police.
Serup spent months in rehabilitation after several of his teeth were knocked out by the impact of the arrow. He also spent months trying to get the provincial government to pay for extensive jaw and tooth replacement after he at first had been offered only a dental plate under the victims of crime compensation.
“I think its nuts that he walks away without even a criminal record after he tried to kill me" said Serup. "He won’t be monitored; he is not compelled in any way to take his medication, it just terrible to think what he could do again."
Serup says "I have been to the Crown Counsel and they say they will have a look at it."
