Special Tribute to a Special Physician
By 250 News
A Tribute to:
Dr. EDWARD STEVE BUKSA 1937 - 2005
Known by the endearing name of “Fast Eddy,” Eddy Buksa was a long-time member of Prince George’s medical community. He was one of the last of a class of physicians who could aptly be called, “real doctors.” Today’s graduates are trained in all facets of medicine but rarely have to practise them; referral to a specialist is the usual end-point. In Eddy's time, there were few specialists available, especially in 1964 Prince George. And so, Eddy and his colleagues acted as specialists in many areas of medicine -- very ably, too.
Even in modern-day medicine, Eddy put his patients first. Long after other doctors had ceased the practice, Eddy would try to adjust his holidays to those times when he had the fewest maternity patients due. His patients (thousands of them) loved him. His office hours seemed to approach infinity and he rarely appeared tired. For a good part of his life-ending disease, Eddy was still running his office! Eddy’s house calls were legend and he would often pay for patients’ prescriptions if they were unable to pay themselves.
Eddy’s morning moods were always indicative of the stock market. Similarly, his afternoon moods varied with the fortunes of the Reform Party. He was not too tolerant of “The Left.” His wry sense of humour would always show through these ups and downs.
The ‘250’ citizens say “Thankyou, Eddy, for 40 years of extreme dedication to our city.” As is so often the case, we say it too late.
