The oil and gas industry  does have something in common with the logging industry, death by driving.

This year, in the forestry industry there have been  5 truckers who have died on the job.  The most recent was a crashes on Highway 16  near Terrace earlier this month  which claimed the life of a 53 year old Gitanyow man, and the accident last week that claimed the life of a Quesnel area driver on a logging road.

In the oil and gas industry, driving is the single leading cause of death.  Stats from the Western Workers Compensation Board show that between 1994 and 2005,  motor vehicle crashes claimed the lives of 163 oil and gas industry workers. That number climbs when the WCB adds on the other 24 deaths not originally included in the tally as they happened off the  job.

Enform, the  training, certification, health and safety arm of the upstream petroleum industry has launched a special safe driving campaign targetting drivers, their families and friends.   It is also  revisiting its driver training programs and looking at substance abuse as that has proven to be a significant contributing factor.

Enform wants to  make it clear drivers can make a decision to drive safe.
