Northeast to Help Train Doctors in Family Practice
By 250 News
The Hospitals in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John will be getting some new space upgrades so they can prepare for the arrival of resident Physicians.
Starting in July of 2008, new doctors looking to finish their family practice residency, will be able to take their training in both Dawson Creek and Ft. St. John.
It is part of the family practice residency program being developed by local physicians, Northern Health and UBC.
The program is being viewed as a very positive step for both communities, which face the same recruitment and retention issues as most other northern and rural communities. They also face the challenges brought on by booming economies and rapidly growing populations.
Starting in the summer of 2008, the Northeast will host four family practice residents for the two year program. By 2009, there will be eight family practice residents in the area: four in the first year of their training, four in their second year. The residents will work with Doctors and other health professionals in the communities. They will tend to patients through office and hospital visits.
