From about 5.22 pm. until 7.00 pm. last night Peden Hill was closed and traffic was backed up to Highway 97. The web cam photo at left shows the traffic tie up on Highway 16 west bound as it tried to head up the hill.
Transport trucks, unable to make the hill, tried to apply chains while sanding crews attempted to make the road passable.
Further to the west on Highway 16, at the Mud River hill three transport trucks were stranded on that section of the highway they were also trying to get their chains on, while snow plows tried to sand and make that section of road passable again.
The story was the same to the north of the city were blinding snow resulted in a moose being hit in the Bear Lake area along Highway 97 north.
Here in the city there were a number of fender benders. On Carney, leading on to Massey vehicles were unable to stop on that grade and the road was closed. There were no major injuries as motorists perhaps were taking the head of the police to stay off the roads.
No sooner had BC Hydro restored power to all the areas hit by Sunday’s windstorm, when this latest blast knocked some trees across wires in Hixon. That took down some wires and put 348 customers in that area in the dark. Power is expected to be restored to Hixon by about noon today.
The storm had been predicted to hit but not with the fury that it delivered. Temperatures were expected to drop sharply as Arctic air move into the region. This weather is expected to be with us until the weekend when temperatures will drop to -25 as the Arctic air settles in.
